Two-day festival celebrates spirit of Sufism at Amritsar

Sufism is all about connectivity whether of the soul or geographical boundaries. This was the theme of the two-day International Sufi Festival which concluded at Khalsa College today.

If day one was all about celebrating Sufism and its principles, day two was about educating and inculcating its principles in our socio-cultural existence. The festival celebrated the spirit of Sufism by bringing together its followers from across the world.

Google Celebrates 107 Years Of Winsor McCay's Little Nemo With An Interactive Doodle

I’ve previously written about Chris Ware in Mint Lounge. His books are as grey as many graphic novels are, but that is only in terms of their content. In form, Ware’s books evoke an earlier era (think early 1900s) of comics and advertising. He uses a lot of colours, but his work isn’t evocative of pulp comics at all. His styling is detailed and has a sense of geometric symmetry to it that’s hard to describe in words. I’d particularly recommend his Acme Novelty Series and Jimmy Corrigan.

I will never write an autobiography, says Amitabh Bachchan

As one of India's most high-profile celebrities, he has been the proverbial goldfish in the glass bowl for decades and is also an inveterate blogger. But no autobiographies for Amitabh Bachchan, who says firmly that some pockets of his life are off limits to the outside world and the blog is not a means to document his life. Amitabh, who turned 70 on Thursday, guards his privacy fiercely and says his blog is "just an interaction with people who are followers".

Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan (L) poses with wife Jaya Bachchan (2nd L) , son-in-law Nikhil Nanda (C), daughter Shweta Nanda (3rd R), son Abhishek Bachchan (2nd R) and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan during a party on the eve of Amitabh Bachchan's 70th birthday.

Navratri Starts From 16 Oct to 24 October

'Nav' means 'nine' and 'ratri' means 'night'. Thus, 'Navratri' means 'nine nights'. There are many legends attached to the conception of Navratri like all Indian festivals. All of them are related to Goddess Shakti (Hindu Mother Goddess) and her various forms.

It is one of the most celebrated festivals of Hindu calendar, it holds special significance for Gujratis and Bengalis and one can see it in the zeal and fervor of the people with which they indulge in the festive activities of the season. Dandiya and Garba Rass are the highlights of the festival in Gujarat, while farmer sow seeds and thank the Goddess for her blessings and pray for better yield. In older times, Navratri was associated with the fertility of Mother Earth who feed us as her children.

The 9 nights festival of Navratri begins on the first day of Ashwina of the bright fortnight. Seeds are sown, sprouting is watched, the planets are consecrated, and on the 8th and 9th days, Goddess Durga, Vijayashtami and Mahanavami are worshipped.

The Devi Mahatmya and other texts invoking the Goddess who vanquished demons are cited.
The day after Navratri i.e. the 10th day after Ashwina, is Dussera which celebrates the victory of lord Rama over Ravana. Ravana is burnt in effigy, often giant dummies of Ravana stuffed with fireworks are shot with arrows until they blow up before a large, applauding audience.

Bollywood Actor Amitabh, Rekha to celebrate birthday together!

Exciting as it may sound, but if the buzz doing the rounds in the industry is to be believed, the evergreen yesteryear on-screen couple Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha might end up celebrating their birthday on the same day - i,e. on October 10. If fate would have its way, the two icons of Bollywood may meet on the happy occasion.

Even though, the occasion calls for the loudest cheer and a thunderous round of applause for the two doyens of Bollywood, it would be hard for their fans not to recollect the rumoured relationship they shared in the past.

True Relationship

Relationships are essential if you want to live your life to the fullest. In fact, relationships should be your top priority. That’s why we all need to learn how to build good relationships. Good relationships not only help us meet our needs but also make our life more fulfilling.

One way to build good relationships is by learning their characteristics. By understanding their characteristics, we will be better equipped to build good relationships in our lives.

1. Both sides see the relationship as an opportunity to give

One of the basic relationship problems is selfishness. How does selfishness occur? In my opinion, selfishness occurs when someone focuses more on getting rather than giving. The more someone focuses on getting, the more selfish he or she becomes.

2. Both sides are willing to change

Nobody is perfect but everyone can grow. In a good relationship, both sides are willing to change. They realize that they are not perfect and there is still a lot of room for improvement.

3. Both sides are willing to admit mistakes

In a good relationship, both parties aren’t afraid to admit mistakes. Instead of being defensive, they openly admit the mistakes they make.

4. Both sides are willing to listen first

In a good relationship, both sides are good listeners. They are willing to understand their partner’s position first before trying to get understood.

5. Both sides support each other

Not only are both sides willing to listen, but also they give what their partner needs. The law of reciprocity states that when we do good to others they will also do good to us.

6. Both sides are open to each other

Misunderstanding is one of the basic relationship problems. That’s why it’s essential that both sides are open to each other. When they have something they don’t like about their partner, they should communicate it rather than just keeping it in their heart.

7. Both sides have integrity

In a good relationship, both parties act in line with what they think and say. They keep their promises.

  • Looking at the above points, here are what you should do:
  • See the relationship as an opportunity to give
  • Be willing to change
  • Be willing to admit your mistakes
  • Listen first
  • Support your partner
  • Be open to your partner
  • Have integrity

The findings are based on a meta-analysis of several different studies conducted worldwide from over 200,000 people's drinking habits, conducted by Italy's Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura. It showed that moderate consumption of beer decreases drinkers' risk of heart disease by 31 per cent, just as much as moderate consumption of wine.

Faridkot Abduction Case Victim’s parents to approach HC

The aggrieved parents of 15-year-old Shruti, who was abducted from her house here a fortnight ago, have decided to move the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking a CBI probe into the incident.

“With the police trying to project the case as that of elopement, we are left with no other option but to approach the High Court for a CBI probe,” said the victim’s father, Ashwani Kumar.

“Shruti was kidnapped by a gang on September 24. The police has failed to trace her whereabouts or nab the gang leader, Nishan singh, who is facing 16 criminal cases. Now, the police is suggesting that it is a case of elopement, not one of kidnapping,” said Swaran Singh, member of the local Action Committee that has been formed to get justice for the aggrieved parents.

Romney needs a win in Denver duel

US Presidential debate: Voters like Obama, but concerned about his performance

Republican candidate Mitt Romney is under pressure to produce a strong performance at his first face-to-face debate with President Barack Obama to try to turn around a race for the White House that has been edging away from him.

The 90-minute encounter offers the chance to reach more than 60 million people on television, a far greater audience than watched either candidate speak at the Democratic and Republican conventions.

While that has potential dividends in attracting undecided voters, there is also the risk that one or the other will make a major mistake that can overshadow the campaign in the last five weeks before the November 6 election.

Running behind in the polls, Romney is more in need of a victory than Obama at the University of Denver debate, the first of three such face-offs scheduled in the next four weeks.
