The findings are based on a meta-analysis of several different studies conducted worldwide from over 200,000 people's drinking habits, conducted by Italy's Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura. Heart ailments affecting the young -World Heart Day

As changing lifestyle takes its toll, healthy living only way to prevent it

Heart ailments are striking at an early age in the land known to guzzle dairy products and alcohol with equal zest. People as young as 28 years of age have suffered cardiac arrest and undergone surgery for heart diseases.

Men are at higher risk of suffering from cardiac arrest than women of the same age-group. "This is because until menopause sets in, most women do not suffer from any heart problem," said cardiologist Dr Gursewak Singh Gill.

Dr RK Jindal added that in the pre-menopausal phase, ovarian hormones are known to have some protective mechanism against the occurrence of blockages in the heart, thereby protecting the young women from heart ailments.

PEOPLE MORE LIKELY TO EAT FRUITS WITHIN REACH

Want to stay healthy - then place fruits in a clear bowl within arm’s reach, so that you could help yourself whenever you felt the urge to eat.

The new study says that when fruits are within reach, people are more likely to eat them. Greater visibility of fruit increases their intake, but the same does not hold true for vegetables.

Researchers Gregory J. Privitera and Heather E. Creary, both from St. Bonaventure University, Olean, U.S., tested a total of 96 college students by placing apple slices and carrot cuts in either clear or opaque bowls at a table close at arms’ length or at a table two metres away.

Top foods that keep you young

Green tea:

There is no end to the benefits of this super drink; green tea boasts a wealth of benefits that earns it the top spot in our anti-aging food list. Green tea is believed to help regulate blood pressure, lower blood sugar, boost the immune system, lower cholesterol and studies have even shown that green tea can be effective at preventing cancer. That's as close to the elixir of life as you can get

Leafy greens:

Whilst eating spinach won't be enough to turn you into Popeye, it's certainly excellent for boosting the body's immunity from illness. Spinach and other leafy foods like kale and collard are high in folate which is vital in preventing DNA and blood vessel damage.

Dark chocolate:

Who would have thought this sweet treat would feature in an anti-aging list, but the good news is chocolate can help fight against some signs of aging due to its cocoa content.

Soy products:

Like fish, soy products such as tofu are also a great alternative source of protein than red meat or even dairy, since they have little or no saturated fat. A diet that's low in saturated fat will reduce your risk of developing heart disease and lower blood pressure.

Yogurt:

Judging from their frequently bad press, you might assume that all forms of bacteria are out to get you. Thankfully, this couldn't be further from the truth.

Dark chocolate:

Who would have thought this sweet treat would feature in an anti-aging list, but the good news is chocolate can help fight against some signs of aging due to its cocoa content. Cocoa is rich in a group of antioxidants called Flavinoids which help preserve healthy function of the blood vessels. And healthy youthful circulatory system lowers risk of high blood pressure, type II diabetes, kidney disease and dementia. Don't go ...more

Red wine

A glass of red wine adds up a good dose of anti-aging elements including polyphenol antioxidants, minerals, and resveratrol. Resveratrol which helps to increase 'good cholesterol.

Water:

Few people — whether active or not — drink sufficient water, and side effects of even slight dehydration include headaches, fatigue and low concentration levels.

AN EGG A DAY KEEPS OUR HEART FIT

While eggs are well known to be an excellent source of proteins, lipids, vitamins and minerals, researchers at the University of Alberta recently discovered they also contain antioxidant properties, which helps in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Jianping Wu, Andreas Schieber and graduate students Chamila Nimalaratne and Daise Lopes-Lutz of the U of A Department of Agricultural Food and Nutritional Science examined egg yolks produced by hens fed typical diets of either primarily wheat or corn. They found the yolks contained two amino acids, tryptophan and tyrosine, which have high antioxidant properties.

Families that 'eat together may be healthiest'

Researchers have shed light on the growing scientific evidence that fewer family meals may translate to increased obesity risk and poor nutritional status, particularly among children.
Over 40 percent of the typical American food budget is spent on eating out, with family meals often being relegated to holidays and special occasions.
Aside from negative effects on the family budget, eating out has been shown to be generally associated with poor food choices and bad health.

WALKING MAY HELP TREAT DEPRESSION

Taking a brisk walk could play an important role in fighting depression, according to researchers in Scotland.

Vigorous exercise has already been shown to lessen symptoms of depression, but the effect of less strenuous activities was unclear. A study in the journal Mental Health and Physical Activity showed walking had a “large effect” on depression. One in 10 people may suffer from depression at some point in their lives. The condition can be treated with drugs, but doctors, for mild symptoms commonly prescribe exercise.

Researchers at the University of Stirling scoured academic studies to find data on one of the mildest forms of exercise - walking. They found eight studies, on a total of 341 patients, which fitted the bill.

Nidhi S. Yadav, head, clinical nutrition, Fortis Healthcare, explains how to go about it.
"One should start the day with a glass of lukewarm water and honey. For a tea drinker, it should be a cup of tea with Marie biscuits and two or three walnuts or almonds. This should be followed by a breakfast - one can have muesli, oats, cornflakes with egg white," she said.
"After an interval of two hours, one can go for salads or fruits. Lunch should consist of two chapatis made of multi-grain flour, a bowl of dal and green vegetables. Evening snacks can comprise a cup of tea with idli or dhokla or roasted channa.
"Dinner should consist of vegetable soup, brown bread or chapatis and veggies. If one feels hungry before going to sleep, one can have a glass of milk," she said.
Having fruits is essential to keep calories at bay, but one should avoid banana, mango and grapes as they are high on calories. It is better to go for watermelons, melons and sweet lime. One should either have fruits 40 minutes before a meal or two hours after a meal.

The mystery of beer goggles solved

The mystery of “beer goggles” -- the phenomenon by which people find opposite sex more attractive after just a few alcoholic drinks -- has finally been solved.
Researchers at Roehampton University claim to have found that the beer goggles effect all comes down to symmetry, where one side mirrors the other, or people's perception of symmetry after a couple of hours in a bar.
In other words, alcohol dulls the drinker's ability to recognise cockeyed, asymmetrical faces. “Alcohol affects our innate human ability to choose a mate. We tend to prefer faces that are symmetrical,” team leader Lewis Halsey said.

Wearing heels

More and more of us are opting to wear heels on a daily basis, and this could be bad news for our health. High heels affect our posture, put pressure on joints, and can lead to a range of conditions.

Carrying a heavy handbag

With the rising number of gadgets and accessories the majority of women haul around, many of us are carrying around several pounds of weight on our shoulders every day. As a result, lots of us are also putting our long term health at risk.

Sleeping in makeup

Most of us have succumbed to the temptation to sleep in our post-party makeup at some point. However, leaving makeup on overnight – along with the dirt and oil that naturally accumulates on skin throughout the day.

Matching men drink for drink

From networking drinks to first dates and social events, there are many instances when women may feel compelled to keep up with the drinking habits of the opposite sex. However, women not only tend to weigh less than men.

Worrying and harboring regrets

Stress is damaging to both our physical and mental health, and women are twice as likely as men to suffer from stress-related disorders, as well as having higher rates of depression and anxiety.

Emotional eating

While comfort eating affects both genders, research has suggested that men are more likely to reinforce positive emotions with food, while women comfort eat when they’re sad. Women are also more likely to satisfy their cravings with sweet, high calorie foods.

Not getting enough sleep

Not only can lack of sleep make us look and feel at our worst, but insufficient shut-eye can also lead to increased accidents, calorie consumption and heart disease risk. Unluckily for women, statistics suggest that sleep problems affect more women than men.

Putting themselves last

Not only are women more likely to compromise their sleeping habits to care for children and others, they are also prone to putting their own wants and needs at the bottom of a hectic to-do list of chores and obligations.

How waiters judge you (and how to use it to your advantage)

Every time you sit down at a restaurant you’re being sized up. It’s called “reading a table” and wait staff at fine dining and chain restaurants alike are trained in the technique, according to the The Wall Street Journal.
Beyond flair, and memorizing specials, a good waiter can anticipate the needs of a customer at a glance. At chain restaurants around the country that's what they're being trained to do. Servers at Denny's, T.G.I Fridays, and Romano's Macaroni Grill are now taught to pay closer attention to the subtle  gestures and understated remarks of their customers. The goal for servers is twofold: give the customer a better dining experience by predicting their needs, and ultimately get a bigger tip.
More: 15 secrets your waiter won't tell you

Some obvious signals servers are trained to look out for: Chatty, friendly parties who make eye contact with each other and their server. They’re more likely to be receptive to cocktail and dessert menus. They also might want a little personality and conversation from their waitstaff.  A table of suits on the other hand, may get an all-business order-taker with an attention to getting food to the table on time.

Why do we yawn?

I am quoting below the answer I gave to this question five years ago:

This is a truth about which I cannot give a very cogent and scientific explanation. What is more, I have not seen it in anything I have read.

I do not know why we yawn. I can only guess. When we are tired and sleepy, most of us yawn. Do we have a need for gulping in more oxygen? Perhaps.

Do we want to send a signal to friends and relatives around us that we have had enough of their company and we must take leave and go in for a shuteye?

Perhaps. I do know that when we are listening to a particularly boring speech we become drowsy and begin to yawn? This particular yawn is especially contagious. This usually happens in late afternoon.

The fact that it happens is indisputable. But there are lectures and speeches that wake us up and all yawing disappears. This shows that the origin of yawning is not only physiological. Intellectual and emotional engagement — or disengagement — also makes a difference.

The contagious property of yawning is understandable, if the people who are simultaneously affected are together late in the day and listening to the same boring speaker. Perhaps disengagement of some in the audience, when noticed, leads to a similar disengagement of others.

Female smokers have more bladder symptoms

Bladder problems seen more often among smokers than nonsmokers may be further motivation for women to quit smoking, a new study suggests.

Looking at 2,000 Finnish women ages 18 to 79, researchers found that smokers were three times as likely to say they frequently had to urinate -- with fewer than two hours between trips to the bathroom.

They were also almost three times as likely to report "urgency." That means frequently feeling that you need to get to a bathroom quickly -- a problem often diagnosed as overactive bladder.

There was no clear link between smoking and the risk of having so-called urge incontinence, in which actual leakage follows a sudden, strong urge to urinate.

But that may be because too few women in the study had urge incontinence to be able to detect a connection to smoking, according to senior researcher Dr. Kari A. O. Tikkinen, of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.

The findings, reported in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, do not prove that smoking, itself, causes bladder problems.

But there are already plenty of reasons to quit smoking, or never start, Tikkinen noted in an interview.

"If you smoke, definitely you should try to quit," he said. "This is one more potential reason."

Why being Indian is good for your health ???

How dare our own stand up comedians make fun of us? If only they could learn to look beyond our accent and population, they would discover that our national foibles are doing wonders for our wellbeing. Find the secret to nirvana in hot spices, masala chai and yoga.

The sun saves your heart!

No matter how much you complain about the heat, studies show that exposure to the sun is good for your health.

Get hot to be happy

"Capital melts as temperature rises to a record 47.6!" scream newspaper headlines when summer temperatures soar perilously. However, there is some good in it. "The sun's rays trigger the body's production of Vitamin D, which is vital to the health of your bones," says Dr Navin Taneja, director at The National Skin Centre in New Delhi. The UV rays also prod the pineal gland in the brain to release "tryptamines- mood-boosting chemicals.

Don't bare it all

Limit your sun exposure though: "Skin cancer is on the increase amongst men, especially those who work outdoors," adds Dr Taneja. He advises using a waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher- allowing you to remain in the sun without burning 15 times longer. Even in the sea or pool on holiday, apply some under your shorts and T-shirts as wet clothing doesn't give enough protection.

Aim for the centreResearch shows that the further you live from the equator, the higher your blood pressure is likely to be.UV rays prod the brain to release mood-boosting chemicals.

Chai helps fight diabetes

The therapeutic property of tea is folklore. But did you know that masala chai, our signature spicy brew, helps you to get through the day without any hiccups?

Cure your hiccups

Hiccups can be public embarrassment. "An infusion of cardamom (elaichi) with mint in chai helps relieve hiccups. Also, since hiccups are often caused by spicy foods, sum up an Indian meal with a glass of cardamom-mix masala chai to get immediate relief," says Neha Sharma, dietician at Jaipur Golden Hospital.

Become a better kisser

To finish off a happy spicy meal, have a warm cup of masala chai. The aromatic flavour in cardamom will leave your mouth fresh and kiss ready. And the power of clove will help you get over the problem of premature ejaculation. Now you know why it's best served hot!

Cut your blood sugar

The cinnamon (dal-chini) in masala chai can help treat diabetes! "A teaspoon of cinnamon with food can reduce blood sugar levels as it promotes insulin production and is therefore given to diabetic patients," says New Delhi-based nutritionist, Dr Sonia Kakka
.
Get rid of indigestion

Have a guest 'who cannot digest Indian food' experience'? "Black pepper (kali mirch) in masala chai has an antioxidant effect and promotes healthy digestion."A cup of warm masala chai stops premature ejaculation.
