I’ve previously written about Chris Ware in Mint Lounge. His books are as grey as many graphic novels are, but that is only in terms of their content. In form, Ware’s books evoke an earlier era (think early 1900s) of comics and advertising. He uses a lot of colours, but his work isn’t evocative of pulp comics at all. His styling is detailed and has a sense of geometric symmetry to it that’s hard to describe in words. I’d particularly recommend his Acme Novelty Series and Jimmy Corrigan.

Why Facebook's IPO is gets rich?
The rich are going to get richer when Silicon Valley's biggest IPO starts trading on Friday.
Facebook this week raised the number of shares it intends to float by 25 percent to 421 million shares, and lifted the target price range to $34-$38 per share as investors clamored for a slice of the third-largest IPO in U.S. history.
As a result, the No. 1 social network and its shareholders will now collectively reap more than $15 billion from the initial public offering - a $5 billion hike from early May, when Facebook sought an IPO of roughly $11 billion.
The company itself will not float extra stock, Facebook said in a Wednesday filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. But early investors like venture capital firm Accel Partners; Tiger Global Management, the hedge fund; Goldman Sachs (GS.N); PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel; and companies tied to Russian tycoon Yuri Milner are cashing out with additional sales to the tune of as much as $3.8 billion.
Google doodle remembered Howard Carter
Doodles from Google are not something new, but the homage, these doodles pay to yesteryear artists, denotes a huge honour, and hence are of utmost importance. People, who have been forgotten, are remembered once again through these doodles.
Today's Google doodle pays homage to an English archaeologist and Egyptologist Horward Carter, who is noted as a discoverer of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. Here are the top 10 things that you must know about the doodle and the man behind it - Howard Carter.
1. With a view to mark the 138th birth anniversary of Horward Carter, Google today replaced its usual Google logo with a doodle that includes a wide array of Egyptian treasures that cover the term "Google" and makes it barely visible.
Google doodles celebrates Keith Haring's 54th birthday
Keith Haring died young of AIDS. The iconic figure of downtown New York art scene in the '80s, had by the age of 31, created some of the most lasting images of the late 20th century art. He rubbed shoulders with the likes of Madonna, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. As Google pays homage to Haring on May 4 with a doodle, here is a biography of the talented artist collated by the international media over the last two decades.
The deeply personal documentary of Haring by Christina Clausen, titled 'The Universe of Keith Haring' provides rare glimpses into his life and work. Haring was an artist and social activist whose work reflected the New York City street culture in the 1980s. He developed a love for drawing at a very small age. He learned basic cartooning skills from his father and the culture around him.

Isn't the Gideon Sundback Google doodle Firefox friendly ?
If you are a Firefox user, you might not be allowed to play with the new, interactive zipper Google doodle. This is because the new zipper Google doodle does not seem to be fully compatible with the Firefox browser.
To mark the 132nd birth anniversary of Gideon Sundback, Google posted an interactive doodle on the home page that features a giant zipper running down the centre of the global search engine's home page. And if you drag your mouse down to unzip the zipper, it will split the screen, including the search textbox and reveal the relevant results for the name Gideon Sundback.
More Employers Asking for Facebook Passwords
Studies have shown that Facebook can be a useful hiring tool. Just a 5- to 10-minute perusal of a user’s profile can net more information than a basic personality test. It’s no wonder employers head to the site to check out prospective hires.
But one problem remains: Many users are now going private, cutting off their profiles from outside viewers. As a result, a new trend has emerged. Employers are reportedly now asking job applicants for Facebook passwords.
Is this a good idea? Can you legally ask a job applicant for a Facebook password?

FACEBOOK WILL END ON MARCH 15th, 2012 !
by
Punjabi Articles
PALO ALTO, CA –Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March of 2012. Managing the site has become too stressful.
“Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”
Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th of next year, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts. That gives users (and Facebook addicts) a year to adjust to life without Facebook.
“After March 15th, 2012 the whole website shuts down,” said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back after Facebook goes out of business.”

What Pinterest Can Do That Facebook Can’t
by
Punjabi Articles
Imagine walking into a 14-year old girl's bedroom — what would you see on the walls? Probably pictures torn from magazines, drawings, maybe inspirational quotes. Transform that visual collage into a social media site, and you have Pinterest. The site has taken off since its 2011 launch, with nearly 12 million unique visitors in January, 2012, and its membership has been accelerated by Facebook tie-ins that show your friends' Pinterest activity.

So why all the buzz? How does it work? And is it a contender to Facebook?
The digital equivalent of a 14-year old girl's bedroom is a decent visual metaphor for the site, but Pinterest's effect is much more sophisticated. It's a rich, hyperlinked way to see what others are inspired by and aspire to.
How Pinterest Works
Once you sign up for a Pinterest account, you can "pin" images you see online. You can either input a link into Pinterest manually by copying it, or you can install a browser extension for Pinterest that lets you click a button that's added into in the browser frame to add an image:

Facebook Graffiti Artist Could be Worth $500 Million
Last week Evelyn Rusli and I wrote about the people who are set to get rich from Facebook's coming initial public offering of stock. The most startling was David Choe, a graffiti artist who chose Facebook stock instead of cash when he spray-painted the first Facebook offices in 2005.
Although Mr. Choe declined several requests for an interview while I was reporting the story, he took to the airwaves on Tuesday as a guest on The Howard Stern Show to discuss his windfall. (Warning: the conversation, like Mr. Choe's paintings, is very sexual descriptive.)
After talking about a number of topics that are not safe for workplace discussion, Mr. Choe and Mr. Stern talked about the money the graffiti artist will make from his Facebook stock.

Google, FB remove ‘foul’ content
Internet giants Google Inc and Facebook removed content from some Indian domain websites on Monday following a court directive warning them of a crackdown "like China" if they did not take steps to protect religious sensibilities.
The two are among 21 companies asked to develop a mechanism to block objectionable material after a private petitioner took them to court over images deemed offensive to Hindus, Muslims and Christians.
The case has stoked fears about censorship in the world's largest democracy. "(Our) review team has looked at the content and disabled this content from the local domains of search, YouTube and Blogger," Google spokeswoman Paroma Roy Chowdhury said.

Bitter childhood was Charles Dickens' greatest inspiration
by
Punjabi Articles
Leading Charles Dickens biographer Claire Tomalin has said children are not being taught to read with the attention span necessary to appreciate the novelist's works.
Tomalin said Dickens's depiction of an unequal society was still "amazingly relevant", ahead of nationwide celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth.

Google doodles the Republic Day of India
India's Republic Day parade extended its route from the roads of New Delhi to the Google India homepage in the form of a doodle.
The Google doodle commemorating India's 63rd Republic shows National Bravery Award winning children riding on the backs of decorated elephants, quite like the actual parade on Rajpath, New Delhi. The Google logo appears as a rangoli-like motif in the background.
Nineteen of the 24 children selected for the National Bravery Award – 2009 are participating in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi. Five children have got the award posthumously.

Facebook to make people switch to new profile over 'next few weeks'
Facebook will soon start requiring people to switch to a new profile format known as Timeline, making photos, links and personal musings from the past much easier to find.Timeline is essentially a scrapbook of your whole life on Facebook, compared with a snapshot of you today found on Facebook's traditional profile page. Once activated, Timeline replaces the current profile.
Although some people have already voluntarily switched to Timeline, Facebook hadn't made that mandatory. Beginning Tuesday in the US, Facebook is telling some users that they have seven days to clean up their profiles before Timeline gets automatically activated. Facebook is rolling out the requirement to others over "the next few weeks".

Adults ‘not losing any sleep’ over computers
University of Sydney researchers have debunked the widespread belief that technological devices such as computers and mobile phones are increasingly eating into our sleep.
In a paper just published in the December issue of the Medical Journal of Australia, Nicholas Glozier, Associate Professor of Psychological Medicine, and co-authors apply some scientific rigour to the common perception that Australians were sleeping an hour less than they did a decade ago.

Pollution Board goes online
The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has introduced the e-governance system for giving approvals on pollution issues to the industrialists in the state. PPCB chairman KS Pannu launched the online services at the Board headquarters here today.
With introduction of the online services, the industrialists would not have to visit any office of the Board for seeking either consent to establish an industry or to operate a firm after its establishment. Even renewal of the
permissions would be processed through the system.
Speaking to The Tribune, Pannu said that the hassle-free and paperless service would bring complete transparency and efficiency in the regulatory mechanism of the Board.
"The industrialists will be able to fill the requisite forms online and the Board officials from the level of Assistant Environmental Engineer to the Chairman will process the case online without any paper work", he said.
