SGPC’S PORTRAIT MOVE DRAWS FLAK

The decision of the SGPC executive to install the portrait of former Budha Dal chief Baba Santa Singh in the Sikh Central Museum at the Golden Temple has come in for criticism from certain sections of the Sikh leadership, including SGPC members.

After the Dal Khalsa on Monday shot off a letter to SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar asking him to reconsider the decision taken at the May 3 meeting of the executive at Anandpur Sahib, former SGPC secretary Manjit Singh Calcutta sought to know from Makkar the achievements of Santa Singh and the rationality behind this decision.

“What have been the achievements or accomplishments of Santa Singh vis-a-vis the Sikh panth. All I know is that he rebuilt the Akal Takht in 1984 on the orders of the then Indira Gandhi government and at the very fag end of his life, he came forward to apologise before the Akal Takht for revoking the excommunication order passed against him,” said Calcutta.

Special train to 5 Sikh takhts leaves on Baisakhi

If you want to visit Sikhs’ five sacred ‘takhts’ in Punjab, Bihar and Maharashtra in one go, board a special pilgrimage train from Amritsar on Baisakhi, April 13.

After showing the first ‘takht’ at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the 12-day spiritual journey in a 244-passenger Rajdhani-style train will take the pilgrims to four other ‘takhts’ — Anandpur Sahib (near Ropar, Punjab), Damdama Sahib (near Bathinda, Punjab), Patna Sahib (in Bihar), and Hazur Sahib (in Nanded, Maharashtra).

In between, the passengers will visit Delhi, Gwalior and Agra for other historical gurdwaras and monuments. It is a joint initiative of the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation and Punjab Tourism.

Last year, a similar train was operated on an experimental basis with “luxury fares”. This time, the entire journey will cost much less — Rs 1.55 lakh (Ist AC), Rs 1.25 lakh (IInd AC), and Rs 85,000 (IIIrd AC). The tariff includes food, hotel stay and sightseeing. The train has been revived to accommodate the common man. It will carry 72 (Ist AC), 138 (IInd AC) and 34 (IIIrd AC) passengers.

Weather shield at Golden Temple doesn’t wow heritage lovers

SGPC says causeway shed to benefit devotees, detractors assert it will disturb shrine’s character

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s move to install a fire and water-resistant fabric shed on the causeway between Darshani Deori and the sanctum sanctorum at the Golden Temple to protect devotees from the vagaries of weather, has not gone down well with heritage lovers.

Darbar Sahib manager Harbans Singh Malhi says Rs 1 crore will be spent on the retractable shed, which will be operated with the help of a motor. This will protect devotees from the harsh summer heat and rain. “Infrared lights will keep the passage warm in the winters,” says Malhi. The new facility will be in place within a month.

Heritage lovers, however, feel that the shed would disturb the original character of the shrine. Balvinder Singh, Head, Guru Ram Das School of Planning, Guru Nanak Dev University, says: “The original character of the holy shrine should be maintained at all cost.” Singh, who is also member of the SGPC’s Heritage Advisory Committee, said he had also protested against the installation of ACs inside the sanctum sanctorum. “Now the ACs are damaging the frescoes inside the shrine”, he claimed.

Women seek right to do kirtan in Golden Temple

The parties may be different, but when it comes to their priority, all women candidates in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections are united — it’s womanhood! And given the fact that it is a religious body the agenda is being set for, the issue that represents
equality for them is the right to perform kirtan at Harmandar Sahib, and, if deserving, the possibility of becoming head priest.
Their argument: the Sikh religion stands for equality to all, including women. What men can, women can.
Of the total 170 seats at stake in the election, 30 are reserved for women. The reservation started in the 1996 elections.
Now the women want it to deliver something substantial for them — equality in all religious matters, and, going beyond that, religion to be leveraged to bring them on a par with men in all social matters. They are demanding a proactive role of the SGPC in spheres such as health and education too.
Bibi Jagir Kaur, a former president of the SGPC who is again contesting the election on the SAD ticket from the Begowal constituency, was the first to formally raise the demand for the right to perform kirtan at Harmandar Sahib. She goes a step ahead: "Why can’t women be part of the Sikh clergy and even head of a Takht?" However, she agrees, anyone aspiring for such a post has to deserve it first.
Two other SAD candidates, Paramjeet Kaur from SAS Nagar and Harjinder Kaur from Chandigarh, have similar views. "I think we need to first convince the Sikh masses to accept the idea. But one thing we all know, the Gurus never discriminated against women," Harjinder Kaur says.

Religious groups come to blows at Golden Temple

Followers of Sant Surinder Singh Kahna Dhesian and Damdami Taksal Teeji Dhir (Ajnala) today virtually came to blows and swords were brandished in the ‘parikarma’ of the Golden Temple Complex after the former came out of the meeting of the Sikh high priests.

Sant Surinder Singh was summoned by the Akal Takht for allegedly violating the Sikh code of conduct. It was alleged that while ‘kirtan’ was being performed at Sant Surinder Singh’s Dera at Kahna Dhesian village, some of the devotees started dancing, which was against the Sikh tenets.

According to Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, Sant admitted the mistake and apologised for it. The Sikh high priests pronounced “tankhah” (punishment for religious misconduct) of performing the “path” of Japji Sahib 51 times for Sant Surinder Singh.

However, when Sant and his followers came out of the meeting from the Akal Takht Secretariat and proceeded towards the Golden Temple to pay obeisance, one of them raised the “jaikara”, Jo Bole So Nihal, which infuriated Taksal activists. The two sides entered into an altercation and virtually came to blows. A few people, allegedly owing allegiance to the Taksal, also brandished swords in the air. Taksal chief Amreek Singh, however, said none of his followers took out the sword and they were simply asking the Dera followers to appear before the Akal Takht Jahedar again.

Meanwhile, the Sikh high priests discussed the report submitted by a panel formed by the SGPC to look into the controversy surrounding errors in the printing of “birs” of Guru Granth Sahib.
However, NRI Surinder Singh Dhesi, who got these “birs” published, failed to appear before the Sikh high priests on account of his daughter’s marriage. The Akal Takht Jathedar said Dhesi will be summoned in their next meeting, only after which the picture will become clear.

DEVOTEES AT MERCY OF GOD

Even as the Golden Temple is thronged by thousands of devotees everyday, the holiest Sikh shrine managed by the SGPC, having an annual budget of Rs 580 crore, doesn't have a proper medical care facility to fall back on in case of any untoward incident.

Though the Golden Temple Complex has two dispensaries — one being run by the SGPC and the other by the Fortis Group, they are only equipped to deal with minor cases of injury or ailment among the devotees from time to time. While the Fortis dispensary has a doctor available between 10 am and 4 pm, the SGPC dispensary is being run by a pharmacist.

Moreover, the dispensaries are located in the middle of the "sarais" (inns) on the other side of the complex and not around the main entrance of the shrine. The SGPC hasn't even put up a board to pinpoint its dispensary for the devotees. However, the Fortis authorities have placed a small board atop its dispensary door. Some SGPC officials feel that a few rooms at any of the five "sarais" (inns) in the Golden Temple Complex may be spared for providing better medical facilities.
They also opined that one or two rooms should be allocated in the 'parikarma' of the Golden Temple for meeting any medical urgency. In summers, there are cases of devotees fainting almost daily and to provide them immediate relief there should be first-aid facility in the 'parikarma', besides a couple of stretchers and wheelchairs to shift them to proper medical care, they said. He nearest proper medical care facility is the SGPC-run Guru Ram Das Hospital which may be around 2 km from the shrine but the route is marred by narrow lanes, congested markets and traffic chaos.
On the other hand, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said they will soon facilitate four-five beds for the purpose and also assign permanent duty to a doctor from Guru Ram Das Hospital at the Golden Temple. He said they will also make sure that stretchers are available in the 'parikarma'. He said they have already made arrangements like putting up "shamiana" and water-sprinkling fans for the devotees in view of harsh summer.
Deputy Commissioner KS Pannu said they have deployed a mobile medical van at the shrine and they have 20 such vans in the holy city under the newly launched 108 ambulance service scheme. He admitted that it would have been better to have a proper medical facility near the Golden Temple, but said it was not possible now due to space constraints. He said they have made a provision for first aid and trauma facility in the under-construction Golden Temple Entrance Plaza.
