SGPC’S PORTRAIT MOVE DRAWS FLAK

The decision of the SGPC executive to install the portrait of former Budha Dal chief Baba Santa Singh in the Sikh Central Museum at the Golden Temple has come in for criticism from certain sections of the Sikh leadership, including SGPC members.

After the Dal Khalsa on Monday shot off a letter to SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar asking him to reconsider the decision taken at the May 3 meeting of the executive at Anandpur Sahib, former SGPC secretary Manjit Singh Calcutta sought to know from Makkar the achievements of Santa Singh and the rationality behind this decision.

“What have been the achievements or accomplishments of Santa Singh vis-a-vis the Sikh panth. All I know is that he rebuilt the Akal Takht in 1984 on the orders of the then Indira Gandhi government and at the very fag end of his life, he came forward to apologise before the Akal Takht for revoking the excommunication order passed against him,” said Calcutta.

SGPC heading towards a crisis ?

With the newly elected SGPC House caught in legal tangle over the Sehajdhari issue, the premier Sikh body seems to be heading towards a crisis and may find it difficult to pass its annual budget in March.

The annual budget of the SGPC has to be passed by its executive as well as the General House before March 31. The SGPC needs to issue notices to its members informing them about the Budget Session 21 days in advance after getting it passed from the executive. However, the executive of the newly elected SGPC House is yet to be formed.

This means the SGPC has now less than a month left to get its executive in place and the annual budget passed by it.

SGPC POLL PANEL NOTIFIES RESULTS BUT FAILS TO GIVE PARTY POSITIONS

The Gurdwara Election Commission (GEC) notified the winners of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections paving the way for constitution of the new house but is yet to take any action on complaints of bogus voting by non-Keshdhari Sikhs in the recently held polls.

The Commission, which notified the results today, five days after the SGPC election, was still unable to give the party position of different parties despite the fact that the SAD had won most of the 170 seats to which elections were held. The panel also could not provide the voting pattern of men or women in the elections or the voting percentage of each party.

GEC Commissioner Justice (retd) HS Brar when questioned on these issues said the Commission had only been provided the details of those who had won the elections. When asked to provide details of the party-wise position, he initially said this would be provided soon but then was unable to do so. Brar also had a standard one-line reply on all questions regarding "irregularities" in voting during the elections, particularly instances of voting done by non-Keshdharis, saying inquiry was on.

Those who switched loyalties included SGPC ex-member and president of Sultanpur Lodhi Municipal Council Jathedar Jaimal Singh, Block Samiti member Jathedar Gulzar Singh and councillor Gurpreet Raja.

Jaimal said: “Manpreet has a vision to take Punjab ahead. He has resolved to eradicate the menace of corruption…so we decided to join him.” His supporters said they were feeling “gagged” in the SAD.

Manpreet alleged that the SAD coerced and intimidated the voters during the recent SGPC polls. “It was for the first time that an observer had to order a re-poll in the SGPC elections in Gidderbaha constituency. I don’t understand why the SAD leadership was so desperate to win a seat where there was no competition?” he questioned.

Gidderbaha, Amritsar see clashes One hurt as SAD, PPP workers exchange fire

One person was injured in firing during the SGPC polls at Karaiwala village of the most sensitive Gidderbaha segment, the stronghold of People's Party of Punjab chief Manpreet Badal. The election has been cancelled at Karaiwala and two other booths of the government school at Buttarshree where "unidentified" persons captured the booths and indulged in fake polling.

In another incident, SAD candidate from Dodha segment Navtej Singh Kauni was allegedly manhandled by the supporters of Independent candidate Roop Singh Gurisanghar in a polling station in his native Kauni village. Roop Singh was being supported by Manpreet Badal. The SGPC election, particularly in Gidderbaha and Dodha segments, is considered politically significant due to a proxy fight between Deputy CM and SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and Manpreet Singh. Repeated attempts to reach the election observer, Mahabir Prasad, on his mobile phone to enquire about the violence remained futile as his liaison officer every time said he was busy on the other phone.

Gidderbaha SDM Pushpender Singh confirmed that the election at Karaiwala village had been cancelled and the Election Commission would fix the date for repoll. He said the firing incident took place elsewhere in the village and not in the polling station.

The police said the incident was being enquired as supporters of both the ruling SAD and PPP were accusing each other of having fired gun shots due to which a local, Charanjit Singh, suffered bullet wounds on his arm.
An angry mob blocked the Bathinda-Muktsar highway for several hours to protest against capturing of two booths at Buttarshree government school. They raised slogans against Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the SAD candidate Kauni.

Independent candidate Roop Singh alleged that a police squad led by a DSP was involved in booth capturing. His polling agent Gurcharan alleged that some unidentified persons forcibly carried him away in a vehicle and let him free at Bhaliwana.

The returning officer of the segment, Kamal Garg, District Transport Officer, confirmed that the election in the two booths had been cancelled and a FIR has been registered.

Akalis claim clean sweep in SGPC polls

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Monday claimed a clean sweep in the 170-member general house of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the mini-Parliament of Sikh religious affairs.

Senior party leaders said its candidates won 157 out of the 170 seats on which polling was held Sunday in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.

The results to the SGPC general house will officially be announced Thursday by the Gurdwara Election Commission here.

Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is also Punjab deputy chief minister, said the results had clearly shown that the electorate favoured the Akali Dal policies.

"We will continue this victory campaign in next year's assembly election also," Badal said here.

Akali Dal secretary and spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said that SAD-Sant Samaj (a group of Sikh religious organisations) combine candidates have won their seats with comfortable margins.

"The results have proved that Sikh masses have completely rejected the Congress-led so called Panthic Morcha and reposed full faith in the policies and programmes of the SAD," Cheema said here.

He further said the massive mandate has taught a lesson to the Congress to refrain from meddling in the internal affairs of Sikhs.

Women seek right to do kirtan in Golden Temple

The parties may be different, but when it comes to their priority, all women candidates in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections are united — it’s womanhood! And given the fact that it is a religious body the agenda is being set for, the issue that represents
equality for them is the right to perform kirtan at Harmandar Sahib, and, if deserving, the possibility of becoming head priest.
Their argument: the Sikh religion stands for equality to all, including women. What men can, women can.
Of the total 170 seats at stake in the election, 30 are reserved for women. The reservation started in the 1996 elections.
Now the women want it to deliver something substantial for them — equality in all religious matters, and, going beyond that, religion to be leveraged to bring them on a par with men in all social matters. They are demanding a proactive role of the SGPC in spheres such as health and education too.
Bibi Jagir Kaur, a former president of the SGPC who is again contesting the election on the SAD ticket from the Begowal constituency, was the first to formally raise the demand for the right to perform kirtan at Harmandar Sahib. She goes a step ahead: "Why can’t women be part of the Sikh clergy and even head of a Takht?" However, she agrees, anyone aspiring for such a post has to deserve it first.
Two other SAD candidates, Paramjeet Kaur from SAS Nagar and Harjinder Kaur from Chandigarh, have similar views. "I think we need to first convince the Sikh masses to accept the idea. But one thing we all know, the Gurus never discriminated against women," Harjinder Kaur says.

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar and another candidate Rajinder Kaur are openly violating the model code of conduct by pasting their hoardings regarding the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) election on the boundary wall of SCD Government College here.

Makkar, however, said he was unaware about it and termed it as “enthusiasm” of his supporters who, he claimed, were all geared up for his victory in the SGPC election.

A city resident, Ishwarjot Singh Cheema, rued that it was sad that the SGPC president was using government property to propagate his agenda. “Its clearly a violation of the model code of conduct and the district administration should take strict action against him and get this hoarding removed at the earliest,” said Cheema.

BRAR: NEW VOTERS TO BE REGISTERED TILL SEPT 2

The Gurdwara Election Commission has announced that new voters for the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee elections will now be registers till September 2.

Earlier, the commission had announced that the new votes would be made till a day before the elections (September 18). Chief Commissioner of the Gurdwara Election Commission, Justice HS Brar, said the date has been advanced due to administrative reasons.

In a circular to the returning officers, the commission has said that anyone trying to cast a bogus vote or found to have given a wrong declaration on being a “keshdhari Sikh”should be arrested at the polling booth. This, he said, would send out a strong message and prevent “non-keshdhari” voters from trying to cast their vote.

Punjab had 19 observers from Haryana, Haryana would have seven and both Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh one observer each. Busy in SGPC polls, SAD overlooking flood crisis, allege Cong leaders

The Congress has alleged that the ruling SAD leadership is busy in the SGPC elections while the people living in flood affected villages along the Sutlej river are facing a tough situation.

After visiting the flood affected areas in the Ferozepur and Moga districts, former health minister and senior Congress leader Dr Malti Thapar said the SAD leadership should take care of the residents affected by the floods rather than drawing strategies to win over the religious sentiments of Sikh masses in the ensuing SGPC elections.

She said many villages in the Dharamkot tehsil of the Moga district and other adjoining villages of the Ferozepur district are surrounded by the flood waters.

"The local administration has not provided any help to the affected people," she claimed.

She said the local people of flood affected villages have informed her that the administration has not provided them with boats, fodder for cattle and medicines.

She met the sarpanches and panches of a few villages and inquired about their problems. "I would send a detailed report of your problems to the Union Government through a proper channel for immediate relief," she assured the people. Dr Thapar said the state government should deploy medical veterinary and officers for 24 hours in the flood affected areas with regular supply of medicines to check the spread of dreadful diseases.

Adding that the people were suffering from many kinds of skin ailments and viral fever, she alleged that the state government has not provided adequate medicines for them. She also demanded the government to order a special 'girdawari' for evaluating losses to the crops.

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab Saturday released its agenda for the next month's Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) poll calling for the supremacy of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikh religion, and the use of Internet for preaching Sikhism.
