DRINK BEER FOR A HEALTHY HEART -Health

The findings are based on a meta-analysis of several different studies conducted worldwide from over 200,000 people's drinking habits, conducted by Italy's Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura. It showed that moderate consumption of beer decreases drinkers' risk of heart disease by 31 per cent, just as much as moderate consumption of wine.

Published online by the European Journal of Epidemiology, the study gives beer drinkers a chance to level the scores with oenophiles who have occasionally slammed the drinking habits of beer lovers.

Girls burn their father to death WHY DO KIDS KILL THEIR PARENTS?

They were fed up with ‘undue’ restrictions imposed on them

Two girls allegedly burnt their 55-year-old father to death for imposing “undue restrictions” on them and for often thrashing them. The incident occurred in the intervening night of April 11-12 but a case was registered only today.

Sources said Baldev Singh was sleeping in the courtyard of his house when his daughters Devinder Kaur (22) and Shinder Kaur (20) poured kerosene on him and set him ablaze. When he raised an alarm and shouted for help, they pushed him inside a room and set the room on fire.

Frustration behind youth aggression?

February 9, Chennai: A 15-year-old student stabs his teacher to death in the classroom after being repeatedly reprimanded by her for not doing well in studies.

February 17, Amritsar: Two groups of class XI and XII students open fire at each other on school premises, leaving three injured.

February 27, Hisar: An engineering student shoots his classmate dead allegedly over a dispute involving a girl. Reports also suggest the victim paid with his life for being a topper, despite being from a poor family.

For youngsters, it's no longer about minor scuffles and street fights. With a hot head above their shoulders and a knife/gun in their hands, they opt for murder from the menu. What is it that is making youngsters have a short fuse and a low tolerance level? Is it wise to blame them for their behaviour or we, as a society, are responsible?

Dr Sumail Singh Sidhu, who has taught at the SGTB Khalsa College in Delhi University and is currently fighting against censorship in academia, avers that it is necessary to contextualise the behaviour of youngsters of today.

Hollow promise, corruption keep youth away from politics

The entire Punjab may be gearing up for the assembly elections in February, but getting involved in politics is apparently not something that interests Bathinda's youngsters. They attribute the disinterest to a lack of understanding of the system and rampant corruption in politics. Speaking to Bathinda Tribune, many youngsters accepted that although they try and vote in every election, they know either nothing or very little about the political scene in their district.

Twenty four-year-old Himanshu Malhotra has voted more than three times, but accepts that he has little interest in politics and takes his parents advice on which candidate to vote for. ."Most politicians fulfil only 20 per cent of their promises And whatever development is registered happens just a year or a couple of months before the next elections. The candidates of every party are the same when it comes to forgetting the promises, but we prefer to choose something over nothing. It's the case of andhon mein kaana raja."

Adults ‘not losing any sleep’ over computers

University of Sydney researchers have debunked the widespread belief that technological devices such as computers and mobile phones are increasingly eating into our sleep.

In a paper just published in the December issue of the Medical Journal of Australia, Nicholas Glozier, Associate Professor of Psychological Medicine, and co-authors apply some scientific rigour to the common perception that Australians were sleeping an hour less than they did a decade ago.
