24-hr water supply a reality in 11 Punjab villages
Leaving even the enviable water supply in Chandigarh behind, at least 11 villages of Punjab now boast of a 24-hour water supply, thanks to a project of the state government and the World Bank.
Details of the ongoing project were revealed on the inaugural day of the four-day national workshop on "Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Services" organised by the Department of Water Supply and Sanitation, Punjab, here today.
The villages enjoying round-the-clock water supply are Singhpura and Sitabgarh villages in Mohali district, Manherha Jattan and Bedran in Fatehgarh Sahib district, Paprala, Rasoolpur, Railon Khurd, Chitanali, Albiana Khurd and Albana Khurd in Ropar district.

PCMS docs to hold protest in Chandigarh on Dec 9
The Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) doctors have decided to hold a protest in Chandigarh on December 9 against the non-implementation of their nine demands, which were accepted by the government in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on November 5.
Notably, the demands include raising of retirement age of the PCMS doctors equal to their colleagues working in medical colleges, cadre review, which includes creation of specialist cadre on the pattern of the Central government, re-fixation of pay by calculating the NPA on Dearness Pay (DP), restoration of the status of civil surgeon at par with district judge and deputy commissioner, creation of post of Director General of Health Services and designation of administrative SMOs as Deputy Civil Surgeons among others.
Talking to the Tribune, Dr MS Randhawa, patron, and Dr Manjit Singh, general secretary of the PCMSA, said the decision to this effect had been taken in an emergency meeting of the association against backtracking by the government.
‘PDS KEROSENE SCAM’ ROCKS ASSEMBLY
Pegging it at a whopping Rs 2,000-crore scam, the Opposition Congress on Wednesday stalled proceedings of the Punjab Assembly alleging largescale bungling in distribution of kerosene.
Soon after the Zero Hour began, Congress MLA Sunil Jakhar — who led the Opposition charge on the floor of the House — said he had brought 10,000 affidavits collected from poor families, who were not getting fuel. He demanded an adjournment motion over the issue, which had been earlier denied by Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon as “neither a recent occurrence nor a specific issue”.
However, Jakhar reiterated that since it was the last session before the Assembly polls and kerosene diversion was a public issue of grave importance, the motion be allowed. “What is the definition of specific on which grounds an adjournment motion is not being allowed? We have definite allegation on the PDS system. Punjab lifts over 22 crore litres of kerosene every year. Nearly 20 lakh families which do not have a gas connection are entitled to get it.
But where is the kerosene going? Just through a random survey across the state, we have collected 10,000 affidavits. If my affidavits are false, put me behind bars like Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has done with police officer Sanjeev Bhatt,” Jakhar said. But the Speaker declined to concede to the Opposition’s demand, following which, Congress MLAs stormed to the well of the House raising anti-government slogans. Amid the din, state Food and Civil Supplies Minister Paratap Singh Kairon rose to reply to the allegations.

Roshni is not alone as the dance bars have special weekend visitors from as far as New Delhi, even Mumbai and of course different parts of the adjoining states.
The new face of the regional capital is unknown to a sizable portion of the city population.
Youngsters have weekend specific destinations at different places in Sectors, including 8, 9, 26, 34 and 35. Life here begins well after 10 pm and sometimes continues well into early morning.

Day one is fun for freshers No uniform, no strictness, big relief for new college-goers
From tasting delicacies in college canteens to exploring bookshops, classrooms and recreational activities, besides adorning trendy dresses, the first day at college for most freshers was filled with fun and relief from 12 years of school.
While a majority attended orientation programmes, organised by the colleges authorities to make first-year students well-versed with colleges rules and facilities and to welcome them, others were spotted checking out canteens and strolling in campus gardens.
Parents were seen accompanying children on Day One and guiding them, particularly hostel residents, at both postgraduate government colleges in Sector 11. Timetables were put up at most colleges today and students were spotted seen around notice boards to note down their respective schedules.
On being asked if there was any informal ragging, first-year students put up broad smiles and said, “With so much hype about ragging, even seniors are scared of it now. It was only an orientation day today and maybe we could expect some fun ragging in the coming days.”
“It is complete freedom here, free from wearing uniform all these years. Since not much activity is done on the first day, we are checking out all places on the campus,” said Anita and Savita, students of BA-I at PG Government College for Girls, Sector 11.
Most freshers were spotted walking in groups or with school buddies. “It is a nice feeling to explore college. We are just searching places to sit and hang out on the campus,” said Sarabjeet, a first-year student, who was accompanied by her friend Harpreet.
Certain others were receiving tips on how to behave from their parents. “My parents have come along on the first day since a lot of luggage has to be dropped for the hostel. They wanted to personally come and bid me adieu since I would put up in a hostel now,” said Neha, a BA-I student from Ferozepur, who was also accompanied by Arzoo and Jaskeerat.
At DAV College, Sector 10, students were spotted exploring places on the campus. “It is a fun-filled experience to enter college,” said Cheena Nirmal, a first-year arts student.
Yet another student Kritika added, “It was after coming to college that I discovered that many of my class XII batchmates had sought admission here. It was good to reunite in college.”
IPHONE 4 LAUNCHED IN INDIA
The two operators have launched both the versions of the phone (16 GB for Rs 34,500 and 32 GB for Rs 40,900), and are offering tariff plans which will allow a sizeable waiver on the monthly tariff plans.
Shashi Arora, CEO, Airtel- Mobility (Upper North), said: “The market is witnessing an increasing demand for devices that deliver the ultimate user experience — through a good user interface, rich feature capabilities and innovative applications,” he added. Airtel has launched iPhone4 today at Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Shimla and Srinagar, besides 30 other cities.
Aircel, too, is looking at wooing a large number of hi end customers through its bundled offer with iPhone. Gurmeet Makkar, business head, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, said that they were expecting a good response from this launch. “We are also offering a 100 per cent return on the cost of buying the handset, by giving freebies over two years. For the phone that costs Rs 40,900, we are giving freebies and waiver on monthly rental worth Rs 41,090 over two years,” he said. In North India, Aircel has launched iPhone 4 in Chandigarh, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Jammu and Srinagar.
Idea, though, not chosen by Apple as partner, has come up with special plans for data downloads. In Punjab telecom circle, the company is offering GPRS 1GB at just Rs 29 per month.
