CM offers Yuvraj 20 acres for sports academy near UT

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today offered to allot 20 acres of land near Chandigarh to star cricketer Yuvraj Singh for setting up of a world-class sports academy.

The offer was made when Yuvraj and his mother Shabnam Singh called on the Chief Minister at his residence. Badal enquired about Yuvraj’s well-being and wished him speedy recovery.

In 2008, the Haryana Government had given 23 acres of land near Jhajjar on lease to star cricketer Virender Sehwag for setting up a cricket academy and an international school.

Faridkot district bags prize for high voter turnout

For a high turnout of voters and educating them not to get lured by drugs and bribe during the recent Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has selected Faridkot district for a prize for effective use of its Systematic Voter Education and Electorate Participation (SVEEP) programme.

Days before the polling day, in a first-ever-of-its kind initiative in the state, the Faridkot district administration and the election commission office had jointly organised public meetings and played videos on projectors in the rural and urban areas to educate the voters.

CM appoints 21 Chief Parliamentary Secys

It is soon going to rain red beacons and Toyota Camrys' in Punjab with the state government deciding to promote 21 legislators as Chief Parliamentary Secretaries. Of them, 17 MLAs would be from the Shiromani Akali Dal while the remaining four would be from the Bharatiya Janata Party.

All the Chief Parliamentary Secretaries would be administered oath by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on April 10 at the Punjab Bhawan in Chandigarh.

Badal, Sukhbir Keep 7 Deptts Each, Dhindsa Will Be FM

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal tonight allocated porfolios to his cabinet colleagues, giving finance to one of his close aides, retaining seven ministries to himself and giving charge of an equal number of departments to his son and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

The departments which Badal kept with himself include Personnel, General Administration, Power, Cooperation, Science Technology and Environment, Vigilance and Employment Generation, an official release said here.

Sukhbir was allocated charge of Home, departments of Governance Reforms, Housing, Excise and Taxation, Investment Promotion, Sports and Youth Services Welfare and Civil Aviation, the release said.

Parminder Singh Dhindsa, son of Akali Dal General Secretaryand MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, will be Finance and Planning Minister.

Apart from it, he has also been allocated Institutional Finance and Banking and Programme plementation.

MLAs take oath on opening day l BJP’s Babbu is Deputy Speaker

14th Vidhan Sabha came into being today with all MLAs, barring one, present to take the oath of allegiance to the Constitution as a legislator on the opening day of the Budget Session.

Starting with the leader of the House, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, and followed by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, the session saw the entire Punjab Cabinet take oath, but not before newly named Congress Legislative Party leader Sunil Jakhar was called to take oath.

Budget is disappointing: Shiromani Akali Dal

Budget 2012-13 was "disappointing" and had nothing for women, who comprise half the population, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Harsimrat Kaur said Friday.
"This is a disappointing budget as it offers nothing for women who are half the population. Duty hike on bicycles will affect the poor," Harsimrat Kaur told IANS.

RAIL FAIR hike after 9 Years -Trivedi’s rail fare hike triggers political storm

Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi today announced an increase of 2 paise per km to 30 paise/km in passenger rail fares across various categories, choosing to tread a path his predecessors, including his own party chief Mamata Banerjee, had avoided for a decade.

The proposals led to a political storm as angry Banerjee sought her own Trinamool colleague’s scalp amid rising criticism of the hike. The Trinamool Congress chief said she was not informed about the impending passenger fare hike.

19% Punjab MLAs facing criminal cases

The hue and cry against criminalisation of politics notwithstanding, the voters of Punjab this time have elected 19 per cent MLAs, who have criminal cases pending against them. The situation is more alarming in Uttar Pradesh with almost half of the 224 newly elected Samajwadi Party MLAs facing criminal cases. Almost 25 per cent of these are facing cases with serious criminal charges like murder, attempt to murder, theft, robbery etc.

In Uttarakhand, 19 of the 70 newly elected MLAs have criminal background, according to Uttarakhand Election Watch.

Of the 117 legislatures in Punjab analysed by Punjab Election Watch, 22 (19%) have criminal cases pending against them. As many as eight MLAs (7 per cent) are facing serious criminal cases. In the Punjab 2007 Assembly elections, 21 (18%) were facing criminal cases.

Defeats nearest rival and Cong candidate Harminder Jassi by 6,645 votes; PPP candidate Sukhdeep Bhinder finishes third 

The sitting Congress MLA from Talwandi Sabo Jeetmohinder Singh Sidhu registered victory in the district by the highest margin of 8,524 votes over his rival Congress candidate Amarjit Singh Sidhu, while sitting MLA from Nathana Ajaib Singh Bhatti won by the thinnest margin of 1,288 votes from the Bhucho Mandi constituency.

Bathinda district saw two former ministers contesting the elections, including irrigation minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon from Maur and former power minister Sikandar Singh Maluka from Rampura Phul.

How the Akali-BJP combine bucked the anti-incumbency trend and routed the Congress despite the Manpreet factor


The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP alliance made history by overcoming anti-incumbency to retain power for the second consecutive term, thus creating history in the Punjab electoral politics. By winning 56 seats on its own and with its alliance partner BJP winning 12 seats, this will be the first time in Punjab’s history that a ruling party has been voted back to power.

By wrestling 68 of the 117 Assembly sets, the Akali BJP combine has got a formidable lead over its main rival, Congress, which has won 46 seats. While three independents have won at the hustings, the Third Front under the banner of “Sanjha Morcha” has failed to get any seat.

Punjab Elections 2012 update Result

CoCongress is contesting all 117 seats, while SAD 94 and BJP 23. In the last election SAD had won 50 seats, Congress 42, BJP 19 and independents 06


Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was leading from Lambi constituency by 2305 votes over his nearest rival and cousin Mahesh Inder Singh Badal of Congress. Badal's younger brother Gurdas Singh Badal was in third position.

Punjab BJP President Ashwani Sharma was leading by 1738 votes over his nearest rival Raman Bhalla of the Congress from the Pathankot assembly constituency

From Jaitu (SC) seat, Joginder Singh of Congress defeated Gurinder Singh of SAD by 6,342 votes.

Manpreet is also contesting from Gidderbaha, the constituency which he has represented on four occasions, but from there too he was trailing, according to the available trends.

From Maur Assembly segment in Faridkot, Punjab Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon of SAD defeated Mangat Rai Bansal of Congress by a margin of 1,387 votes. PPP President Manpreet Singh Badal finished at number three.

SAD's Nand Lal beat Shiv Ram Singh of BSP by a margin of 14,857 votes from Balachaur assembly constituency, while Gulzar Singh Ranike of SAD beat Tarsem Singh of the Congress by a margin of 4,983 votes from Attari (SC) seat.

Congress' Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu bagged the Talwandi Sabo assembly seat, while O P Soni of Congress won from Amritsar Central, defeating his nearest rival Tarun Chugh of the BJP by a margin of 12,797 votes.

Sadhu Singh of Congress won from Nabha (SC) constituency defeating his nearest SAD rival by a margin of 22,548 votes

From Faridkot,SAD's Deep Malhotra beat Avtar Singh Brar of the Congress by a margin of 2,727 votes and SAD's Harpreet Kaur beat Madan Lal Jalalpur of Congress by a margin of 1,778 votes from Ghanaur

From Balachaur constituency, SAD's Nand Lal beat Shiv Ram Singh of BSP by a margin of 14,857 votes, while from Rajpura seat Hardial Singh Kamboj of Congress beat BJP's Raj Khurana by a margin of 31,510 votes.

Navjot Kaur, wife of BJP MP from Amritsar Navjot Singh Sidhu, has won from Amritsar (East) constituency, defeating her nearest rival and Independent candidate Simarpreet Kaur by a margin of 7,099 votes

Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh retained Patiala constituency by defeating SAD's Surjit Singh Kohli by a margin of 42,318 votes, while his son Raninder was trailing by 1630 votes from Samana Assembly constituency.

Manpreet singh badal lose his seat.

Pargat Singh (akali) won from Jalandhar cantt.

Sukhbir Singh Badal(Akali) won from Jalalabad with 50,000 votes

Badal village abuzz with activity

Chief Minister pays obeisance at Talwandi Sabo, attends akhand path at his residence

With all eyes on March 6 when the election results will be declared, the native village of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is once again abuzz with activity.

Parkash Singh Badal, his son Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and daughter-in-law Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Bathinda MP, are camping at their palatial house in Badal village.

The family had gone on a holiday after spending a few days in Delhi. Sources said senior party workers of Lambi and nearby areas were calling on the CM’s residence to discuss political matters.

Unwilling to go by the exit polls that give the Congress an edge to form the next government, the Chief Minister claimed that the results would go in favour of the SAD-BJP alliance.

Mamta’s nephew faces judicial custody in assault case

The nephew of West Bengal chief minister Mamta Banerjee has been sent to day-long judicial custody by a Kolkata court on Thursday. Akash Banerjee and three others have been accused of assault.
Mamta Banerjee’s nephew, Akash(28), had allegedly manhandled a police officer after his vehicle was flagged down as it jumped a traffic signal in Khidderpore on Wednesday.
The accused was let off by the police once his identity was known. But the TV channels available at the scene and following pressure from the Congress, his arrest orders were given by the Banerjee’s office.
He was booked under a non-bailable section and would be produced in court on Thursday.

SGPC heading towards a crisis ?

With the newly elected SGPC House caught in legal tangle over the Sehajdhari issue, the premier Sikh body seems to be heading towards a crisis and may find it difficult to pass its annual budget in March.

The annual budget of the SGPC has to be passed by its executive as well as the General House before March 31. The SGPC needs to issue notices to its members informing them about the Budget Session 21 days in advance after getting it passed from the executive. However, the executive of the newly elected SGPC House is yet to be formed. 

This means the SGPC has now less than a month left to get its executive in place and the annual budget passed by it.

Arrangements in place for Braille ballot users in Bathinda dist

1,859 Braille ballots to be dispatched for visually impaired voters; two Braille ballots would be given at each booth

Altogether 1,859 Braille ballots would be dispatched for the blind voters spread across the six constituencies of Bathinda district. The Braille ballots are meant for the literate blind voters, while the illiterate could take along their attendants to cast votes.

Two Braille ballots would be given at each of the 929 polling stations situated in the district. Interestingly, though arrangements are being made for the blind voters, the District Election Office does not have a consolidated figure about the number of blind voters in the state.

Badal clan beats royalty in riches

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's family of agriculturists is richer than the royal family of Patiala. While the Badals are worth nearly Rs 100 crore, Capt Amarinder Singh and his wife Preneet Kaur are worth less than half at Rs 45.71 crore.

 Although the couple's son, Raninder Singh, will file his papers tomorrow, his assets in the 2009 parliamentary election, when he contested from Bathinda, were Rs 7.28 crore and that of his wife Rs 6.47 crore.

Badal’s affidavit that formed part of his nomination filed from Lambi today showed he possessed assets worth Rs 6.92 crore.

Leave politics to the politicians is what once bitten twice shy Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans has to say to artistes trying their luck in the political arena in the Punjab Assembly elections.

But the artistes are determined to deliver a poll punch. They claim to be different and are confident their fate would also differ from that of their predecessors.

Punjab does not have a history of supporting artistes in politics, however big the name. Hans Raj Hans unsuccessfully contested the last Parliamentary elections from Jalandhar. Folk legend, the late Kuldeep Manak bit the dust when he contested the 1996 parliamentary elections as an Independent from Bathinda.

Groundbreaking work, no plants yet

The SAD-BJP government may miss by a couple of years the deadline it set for delivering ‘surplus power’, but the new plants launched are a major initiative in years. Meanwhile, it met the demand through market purchases at a huge cost


The Shiromani Akali Dal promise was simple. It would make power availability in the state surplus to the requirement. The SAD-BJP government is now close to the end of its tenure, and the promise is nowhere near being delivered.


But there is a positive too. The government may have failed to keep the 2007 manifesto promise.

Akal Takht announces punishment for guilty

Recommends registration of police case against miscreants who showed black flags to PM; Amitabh issue deferred


The Akal Takht here today held the members of Italy-based National Sikh Dharam Parchar Committee (NSDPC) guilty of showing disrespect to Sri Guru Granth Sahib and misbehaving with the SGPC officials who had gone there (to Italy) to distribute 450 Birs (holy scriptures).

Led by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, the five high priests directed the guilty to clean footwear and wash utensils of devotees who partake ‘langar’ at a path they have been told to hold at Vakanza gurdwara in Italy.
