Cop accused of slapping woman, probe ordered-Patiala
A head constable has been accused of slapping a woman after she refused to sit inside a PCR van. The cop was on duty at the Kotwali police station here. The woman was accused of stealing and the cop had asked the woman to accompany him to the police station in a PCR van but when she refused, she was slapped by the cop.
The woman has been identified as Sunita. The incident happened when Smita, wife of Tajinder Kumar from Sahib Singh Nagar. She was here for some work. She took an auto rickshaw from Punjabi University and there were three other women who sat with her in the auto rickshaw. Smita got down at Purani Chungi and when she opened her purse to pay the auto rickshaw driver, she saw that the money had been flicked.
The moment she looked at her co-passengers, they started to flee. As soon as she raised an alarm, one of the three women, Sunita was caught by the people. When she was searched, the money that was flicked was found. Smita got her money back and she left.

Accuse police of high-handedness, threaten to launch a protest if the cases are not withdrawn
Lawyers in the city today held a protest and raised slogans against the police while accusing it of high-handedness.
The protest was held in the light of a case registered against the son of an SGPC member, who along with his two friends had jumped a police naka and allegedly abused policemen and doctors under the influence of liquor, at the Civil Hospital on Wednesday night.
The protesting lawyers alleged that the three persons, including the son of the SGPC member Sukhdev Bahia, also a lawyer, were manhandled and two cases were registered against them.
Girl resists snatching bid, cops suspect eve-teasing -Bathinda
Despite the intensified patrolling by the police, there seems to be no let up in snatching incidents in the city which continue to haunt the residents every now and then.
While the police blames the residents for not taking preventive measures and continuing to wear gold chain and ear rings while moving on deserted roads, the people accuse the police of not doing enough to check the menace.
In today's incident, a city girl, Veerpal Kaur, who works as a marketing executive in a company selling household products, was attacked by a turbaned youth on a motorbike.
The youth tried to snatch her gold chain but failed. The girl was walking in a street near the Ganesha Basti at around quarter to eleven in the morning today. The girl resisted the snatching bid and tried to raise an alarm. But since it was a hot day, not many people were out on the streets.
Teachers to meet Minister on June 16 -Bathinda

One of the two groups of the SSA, RMSA and CSS Teachers' Union has managed to seek a meeting with the Punjab Education Minister, Sikander Singh Maluka. State convenor of this group, Ram Bhajan, told Tribune News Service that Bathinda Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill conveyed the news to them.
“We had met the SSP yesterday and he had assured us that a meeting would soon be fixed with the education minister. When we met him today again, he told us that the meeting had been fixed for June 16 at village Maluka. We've been told that the Education Minister has agreed to hold an open forum to hear our demands,” said Ram Bhajan.
Very few students from the city had managed to crack the IIT-JEE-Bathinda
The results of the All India Engineering Entrance Exam, announced late on Saturday night, brought the smiles back on the faces of many students in Bathinda, who hadn’t done too well in the IIT-JEE exam.
With an all India rank (AIR) of 332, DAV School student Shivali managed to secure the ninth rank in the entire state. Shivali had secured rank 973 in the IIT-JEE. Shivali aspires to take up chemical engineering at IIT Delhi.
Pushapjeet Sodhi, a Saint Fateh Singh School Maur student, grabbed the 29th state rank with an AIR 1019. Army Public School student Prashant Kumar Singh secured rank 128 rank in the state with an AIR 5149.
Bathinda most hit by power failure
Domestic consumers in the state had to bear the brunt as several areas in a number of districts, particularly Bathinda, plunged into darkness following a power failure.
The power demand has escalated as mercury in most parts of the state has gone beyond 46 degrees Celsius. The Power Corporation functionaries claim that it has purchased electricity from the open market to bridge the demand-supply gap. But, several districts of Punjab were seen reeling under power crisis today.
In Bathinda, power cuts were imposed at 1.30 am in several areas, including Green Avenue, Jhujhar Singh Nagar and Model Town Phase-III. Till the afternoon, power could not be restored. Besides, normal consumers in Bathinda have been sweating it out for three to four hours daily on account of power failuredue to overloading of transformers, which causes tripping.
Malwa College of Physical Education, alumnus creates record
Om Prakash, an alumnus of the Malwa College here, created another record with a throw of 20.69 metres, shattering a 12-year-old national record in shotput.
In a press statement issued here today, a spokesperson of the college said the previous best was 20.42 metres by Shakti Singh. Om Prakash has already qualified for the London Olympics to be held this year.

A relic from the Harappan civilization, coins from the medieval period, and lots more is what you can get to see when you visit the museum at the Central University of Punjab (CUP) in Bathinda.
The university came up with the idea of setting up the museum a couple of months back and noted historian, Subhash Parihar, who holds a PhD in Mughal architecture in Punjab (1526-1707), became the curator for the same.

29 BLACK BUCKS DIE AT BIR TALAB
Forest officials say deaths occurred due to stampede caused by the entry of a stray dog in a cage

Twenty-nine blackbucks, the state animal of Punjab, were killed today in the Deer Park at Bir Talab near here when a stray dog entered an enclosure resulting in stampede among the animals. According to the wildlife officials, among the killed Blackbucks were 25 female and 4 male animals.
The stray dog, somehow, entered the enclosure before the crack of the dawn and started chasing the animals. There were 34 blackbucks in the enclosure that is spread in an area of about 250 square metres.

ENGG TEST IS ON APRIL 29 -Officials, students scramble for rooms in hotels
The district is set to witness two major events this weekend. While on April 28, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate Guru Gobind Singh Refinery near Ramsara, on April 29, the district will play host to candidates across the state for the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Bathinda is the only offline centre for the exam in Punjab while Chandigarh is the only online centre.
With these two major events scheduled one after the other, city hotels are seeing a surge in bookings for rooms. Already more than 150 hotel rooms across the city have been booked for guests attending the refinery inauguration.

It will be a special day for the Malwa region on Saturday when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will formally inaugurate the Rs 20,000-crore Guru Gobind Singh Refinery (GGSR) here.
More than 300 labourers are working round-the-clock to meet the deadline of constructing a helipad and fire and waterproof hangars to accommodate about 15,000 invitees for the occasion. Material for these hangars has been brought from Delhi by a Mumbai-based company that has been awarded the job.
The inaugural ceremony will be attended by several dignitaries, including Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil, Union Petroleum Minister Jaipal Reddy and Union Ministers Ambika Soni, RPM Singh, Ashwani Kumar, Preneet Kaur and top officers of the petroleum ministry.

Lehra plant in trouble as Sirhind canal closed

The 20-day closure of the Sirhind canal has endangered power generation at Guru Hargobind Thermal Power Plant, Lehra Mohabbat. Sending an SOS to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), the thermal plant authorities have said that they were not informed about the closure by the Irrigation Department.“
After the flow of water stopped, we contacted the irrigation office at Bathinda and learnt about the closure of the main canal. “The water level at the plant lake is going down by the day and this may lead to a power shortage,” said officials.

After passing through four to five month-long process, the Suwidha Centre, situated on the premises of the Mini-secretariat here, has now finally got the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) Certificate (ISO-9001:2008 Quality Management Systems - Requirements).
After the Suwidha Centre of Ferozepur, the Bathinda Suwidha Centre is the second such centre in the state to have got the ISO certification on the basis of its quality management systems and requirements, needed for getting the ISO certification.

Hairatjit only girl from Punjab to make it to Indian Forest Service
Will now join the six-month foundation course in Dehradun starting August
Hairatjit Kaur, 26, a resident of village Kachi Bhucho, has made it to the Indian Forest Service (IFS), securing fifth rank in the general category.
Hairatjit is the only female candidate from Punjab to have cleared the examination. Speaking to TNS over the phone, Hairatjit said being a science student, she was always hunting for different career options.
