‘Initially, I didn’t get any help from the system and had to struggle a lot’

After securing a berth in the London Olympics, shot putter OP Singh visits Bathinda where he studied and honed his skills for many years

Standing 6 feet 7 inches tall, shot-putter Om Prakash Singh Karhana, or OP as he is popularly and fondly called, can dwarf anybody standing next to him. Apart from his height, the sporting achievements of this 25-year-old shot-putter will also put many to shame.

Contrary to expectations, OP, who has qualified for the London Olympics in the shot-put event, is humble and down to earth. OP, a gazetted officer with the ONGC, who has been undergoing training in Hungary, was at his alma mater Malwa College today to attend a ceremony, held to felicitate him.
