Surinder Kaur ‘Nightingale of Punjab’
by
Punjabi Articles
Surinder Kaur (November 25, 1929 – June 15, 2006), was an Indian singer and songwriter. She sang mainly Punjabi folk-songs, where she is credited for pioneering and popularising the genre and later was known as the ‘Nightingale of Punjab’; she also sang some Hindi movie songs, between 1948-1952
She was born in a conservative Sikh family of Lahore (Punjab, Pakistan) on November 25, 1929, where singing was considered as a taboo. But her brothers stood by her and helped her to start her journey in 1943 with a program on radio Lahore. This journey was continued for more than six decades and concluded in blessing Punjabi music with a mammoth collection of more than 2000 songs. Some of them are greatest songs ever sung.
Her husband encouraged her and introduced her to the celebrated Punjabi poets of that time like Amrita Preetam, Shiv Kumar Batalvi, Prof. Mohan Singh and Nandlal Noorpuri. And she never looked back ever since and by lending her voice to the literary gems by these great poets and made them eternal.
She gave birth to a new style of singing and represented an entire era of Punjabi music. It wouldn’t be overstate if it is said that she is literally worshipped by the people from all walks of life in Punjab. She was among the one that achieved the status of a living legend, during her lifetime.
“There was a time that the singer would sit and perform, and would sway the crowds to get up and dance. Now the singer is expected to perform, while the audience sits back and gawk at them. I come from an era where the voice was important, how can I perform today, when the musical beats and body language are used to captivate the audiences’ attention,” she said in an interview before her death, expressing her regrets about contemporary Punjabi singers.
“The singers of today,” she said, “sadly, do not sing with the strength of their voice and control, but on the beat of the music and orchestra. In our times we used to have only two instruments on stage and we would even avoid giving these instruments a microphone so that voice could dominate. The new generation should also look to improve the selection of songs. It needs a more literary refined touch.”
The lady with the melodious voice once said that the reason for her success is that she never gave up learning. She believed that a life well lived is when it has been a continuous learning process. The folk songs that she sang, she learnt from her mother or other relatives, especially during weddings. But a lot of tunes and songs she picked up from unknown people, as they sat humming these tunes.
The obituary of this great singer will be incomplete if we don’t talk about her sister Parkash Kaur and her companion Assa Singh Mastana. Surinder Kaur had a special bond with her sister. Whenever they sang together the tuning was remarkable. While singing with Assa Singh Mastana she gifted some of the most memorable songs ever listened in Punjabi.
Her daughter, Dolly Guleria, is carrying the family tradition forward, and grand-daughter, Sunaini, too is following their footsteps. The three generations had, in fact, sang together in a Punjabi album in 1995 called “Surinder Kaur- The Three Generations.”
It is sad that physically she in not part of this world but legends acquire an immortal status and this is one voice that is and will always be timeless. The songs sung by her will survive as an integral part of Punjabi culture like the following lines of Keats from “Ode to a Nightingale”.
WHO WARNS OF ENORMOUS BURDEN OF CHRONIC DISEASE
by
Punjabi Articles
Chronic illnesses like cancer, heart disease and diabetes cause more deaths than all other diseases combined, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday. In a global report on so-called non-communicable diseases, or NCDs, the United Nations health body said such diseases had reached epidemic proportions and now pose a greater threat than infectious diseases like malaria, HIV and tuberculosis (TB). "The NCD epidemic exacts an enormous toll in terms of human suffering and inflicts serious damage to human development in both the social and economic realms," the report said. "This state of affairs cannot continue. There is a pressing need to intervene. Unless serious action is taken, the burden of NCDs will reach levels that are beyond the capacity of all stakeholders to manage." NCDs, which include heart disease, cancer, diabetes and respiratory conditions, accounted for 36 million, or 63 percent, of the 57 million deaths worldwide in 2008. Yet that burden could be significantly reduced, with millions of lives saved and much suffering avoided, if people did more to avoid major risk factors like smoking, drinking and being overweight, the WHO said. It found that almost 6 million people die from tobacco use every year -- both directly from smoking, and indirectly from second-hand smoke. By 2020, this number will increase to 7.5 million, accounting for 10 percent of all deaths worldwide. Another 3.2 million people each year due to a lack of physical activity, at least 2.8 million people die a year as a result of being overweight or obese, and 2.5 million people are killed as a result of drinking harmful levels of alcohol. A special meeting of the United Nations General Assembly is scheduled for September in New York to talk about the rising threat of NCDs, and the WHO's global status report sought to set out ways to map the epidemic, reduce its major risk factors and improve healthcare for those who already suffer from NCDs. It said the epidemic had already ballooned beyond the current capacity of poorer countries to cope, which is why death and disability are rising disproportionately in these countries. "As the impact of NCDs increases and as populations age, annual NCD deaths are projected to continue to rise worldwide, and the greatest increase is expected to be seen in low- and middle-income regions," it added. In many developing countries where the health focus is often on infectious diseases, chronic illnesses are often detected late, when patients need extensive and expensive hospital care. Most of this care is unaffordable or unavailable, or is covered with out-of-pocket payments which can drive patients and their families into poverty, further risking their health. Nearly 80 percent of NCD deaths occur in low-and middle-income countries and are the most frequent causes of death in most countries, except in Africa, the WHO said. But even in Africa, NCDs are rising rapidly and are expected to exceed other diseases as the most common killers by 2020 The WHO said three priorities for action were surveillance -- to monitor chronic diseases, prevention -- to let people know the about risks and help them adapt lifestyles, and healthcare -- to improve treatment and access for those who are sick. It listed its top 10 "best buys", including banning smoking in public places, enforcing tobacco advertising bans, restricting access to alcohol and cutting salt in food, and said these steps should be taken now to produce "results in terms of lives saved, diseases prevented and heavy costs avoided". |

Look Beautiful- Wrinkle Prevention
by
Punjabi Articles
If you thought it was impossible to look 25-30 when you are in your fifties, think again. With care, a smooth, wrinkle-free complexion can be yours for years to come.
Fruits
Face masks refresh and rejuvenate the skin. They provide intensive
nourishment to the skin nourishment that your skin is thrusting for, so make
sure you use face masks regularly on your skin. Almost every seasonal fruit can be applied on the skin. Some fruits like peaches and avocadoes are rich in moisturizers and can be applied to dry skin, while other fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, strawberries, apples, are good for oily skin. Bananas too nourish and soften the skin. So the next time you sit down with a fruit, take out a small piece, mash it and apply it to your face. When you start looking a decade younger than your real age, you will be glad you persevered. For some serious skin firming and nourishment, mash a banana, add honey, and apply this on your skin, and all over your body.
Egg
Egg white tones the skin, while egg yolk nourishes it and prevents wrinkles. If your daughter has an oily complexion, she can put egg white on her skin, while you use the egg yolk on yours. Once you cross the age of 35, start applying egg yolk regularly to your skin. Whole egg mayonnaise too is excellent for the skin, since it is rich in skin nutrients like egg, vinegar and oil.
Essential oils
Essential oils too are excellent for the skin, and they have therapeutic benefits as well. When you are using two oils on your skin, you should make sure you mix them together a while before applying them, to give them time to energise each other. Jasmine, Lavender, Myrrh, Patchouli, Sandalwood and Ylang-Ylang all have effective anti-wrinkle properties and work very well when mixed with a moisturizer.
Massage
Every day and night, while you apply your moisturizer, massage your face for at least ten minutes. Massage it from the neck upwards, because you don't want a clear, wrinkle-free face to rest on a wrinkled neck as you age, do you? Regular facials too help keep your skin looking young till a later age, but if you cannot afford to spend so much time or money at the parlour, even giving yourself a regular massage at home will help. The correct massage strokes would be upwards and backwards toward your hairline. Don't pull your skin too hard. In fact, one of the great ways to massage your face would be to slap it quickly and hard, once again, in an upward and backward direction. This stimulates blood flow and increases circulation, which in turn ensures that a rich supply of nutrients are carried to the skin through the blood. Splashing your face with ice-cold water has a similar effect.
Some people have the tendency to develop puffiness in the face. Regular massage and skin slapping reduces puffiness and leaves skin tight and smooth.
If you feel the beginnings of a double chin, when applying your daily moisturizer slap your double chin area with rapid strokes. Your double chin will vanish.
When you apply under-eye cream, tap the under-eye area rapidly with your fingertips, to pimp up circulation and reduce under-eye puffiness.
POLICE TO BE MADE MORE RESPONSIVE
by
Punjabi Articles
With the aim to make the Punjab police accountable and responsive, the Punjab Government, in a major decision today, decided to bring police services under the purview of the Punjab Right to Services Act, 2011.
This legislation will make Station House Officers (SHOs) directly responsible for public services and will be liable to financial penalty on failure of time-bound delivery of services. The move acquires a special meaning for Punjab, where the SHOs work directly under political bosses. According to the PRS Act, the SHO is proposed to be the designated officer to deliver the services to the people.
Once implemented, Punjab will become the first state in the country to bring the police under the PRS Act. The SHOs will have to reply to issues, supply documents, deal with cases, etc in a specific time frame. This will include issuance of no-objection certificates with regard to public nuisance and safety concerns, character verification, verification of tenants, servants, granting permission for fairs, exhibitions, permission for loudspeakers, etc.
The services that will fall under the purview of the SHO under this legislation will include issuance of copies of documents, countersigning, issuing of SMS and email services. Besides passport services that include registration of foreigners, extension or residential permits to foreigners etc will also have to be done in a time frame.
At the moment, this is normally done for a price. The SHOs will either have to accept or reject the cases and accord reasons for the same. The Punjab Government has already made provisions for making online complaints that can be accessed by the complainant and monitor the progress in the matter. The time frame for various services is being tabulated and is expected to be put up before the Punjab Cabinet when it meets this month after which the government will pass an ordinance.
The time period could vary from one day to one month, depending on the nature of the work. Apart from the service under the PRS Act, the SHOs will also have to perform other regular policing work like maintenance of law and order and crime prevention and detection. “The move will restore the diluted hierarchy within the police setup by making the SHO directly answerable to the people. If a SHO is unable to deliver services like passport or arms verification, issuance of NOC of stolen vehicles etc, the Deputy Superintendent of Police at the sub-division level will decide the complaints/ appeal against the erring SHOs.
“If the complainant’s grievance is not resolved, he or she can approach the Senior Superintendent of Police with a second appeal and if the SSP finds the delay on part of the SHO as unjustified, he will fine the SHO Rs 500 for each day’s delay. This amount will be recovered from the SHO’s salary,” a senior government official disclosed.
After the jurisdiction of the police stations were marked on the basis of political constituencies, the SHOs in Punjab had started acting at the behest of the MLA rather than their superior officer. By bringing the SHOs under the PRS Act, these SHOs will again become directly answerable to the DSP and SSP at the sub-division and district level.

SAINA STARTS FAVOURITE AT INDIAN OPEN
by
Punjabi Articles
Saina Nehwal, the doubles combination of G. Jwala and Ashwini Ponnappa, apart from Malaysia’s world number one Lee Chong Wei, return to the Siri Fort Sports Complex here with memories of another day.
In October last, these leading badminton stars claimed gold medals in the Commonwealth Games in contrasting ways. They are all looking for an encore from a packed house once the inaugural $200,000 India Open Super Series begins on Tuesday.
However, the Chinese have stayed away due to their National League but the field still offers plenty of depth in all five sections. The showpiece event will, as always, be the men’s singles, where Lee Chong Wei, world number two and former Olympic Gold medallist Taufik Hidayat and world number six, former world champion Denmark’s Peter Gade are the star attractions.
But the Indian interest will only more in the ladies singles for two reasons – the prospects of Saina winning the title and the lack of serious Indian challenge in the men’s section. Saina, ranked fourth in the world, was hopeful of repeating her title-winning sequence. Winner of the Swiss Open this year, Saina said, “It is going to be tough but I am confident of doing well again. I have trained hard and my ankle is much better,” assured the Hyderabad girl, who has been nursing an ankle injury in the season so far.
Saina is drawn to play Japanese girls Ai Guto in the opening round with the prospect of facing Indonesia’s Maria Kusumastuti before the much-awaited quarterfinals against Japan’s Eriko Hirose. Hirose had ended Saina’s run in the All England championship in March but the Indian avenged the defeat the following week on way to the Swiss Open title.
The presence of other Indian girl, National champion Aditi Mutatkar, does not promise much. Four other qualifiers, mostly Indians, will complete the 32-player draw on Tuesday evening. In the men’s singles, India’s best hope P. Kashyap is drawn to play Hidayat in the second round. National champion Arvind Bhat, Ajay Jayaram, Guru Sai Dutt and Anand Pawar are the other Indians in main draw.
Some more will join after Tuesday’s qualifying rounds. Besides, Saina, the country’s best title prospect is in the ladies doubles were Jwala and Ashwini are confident of going all the way. Seeded eighth, the Indian girls gain strength from the fact that they have beaten the top two Japanese seeds, favourite Madeka Miyuki-Suetsuna Satoko and Fujii Mizuki-Kakiiwa Reika, at least once.
“We skipped the Asian championship to prepare for this event,’ said an articulate Jwala and continued, “we are well prepared but I do not want to look beyond the first match. We will take it as we go along.” Jwala did feel sad about the fact that the event has not been publicised at all. “On my way to the hotel (from the airport), I noticed that there was not a single hoarding any where. Even outside the stadium, there is nothing. It really feels sad.”

Sachin Tendulkar has mostly celebrated his birthdays in a quiet manner and away from the public eye over the years. On the eve of his 38th birthday too, the Little Maestro chose to make the occasion special in his own way by fulfilling the wishes of physically challenged soldiers based in Pune on Friday.
Special on Sachin's 38th B'day: Sachin@38
Since his cricketing commitments made it impossible for Tendulkar to meet them personally, he interacted with the soldiers undergoing rehabilitation at the paraplegic centre in Pune's Khadki cantonment via a video-conference which was lively and invoked lots of laughter.
While the jawans asked him several questions, Tendulkar too had a few to ask one of them being, "When you (soldiers) go out on a mission there are no retakes. Where do you get the courage from, especially at times when it is a matter of life and death? To which, the jawans replied, "Whatever we do as soldiers is with the responsibility of serving the nation and when we are at the front it is about that and nothing else matters. One doesn't even think about whether you'll stay alive or not." The answer had Tendulkar moved.
On a lighter note, a jawan asked him about his trips to Dehradun and if the hill station was one of his favourite. Tendulkar said, "I have been there only once but the television channels keep showing the same footage. But it's a very nice place and I loved the long morning walks in solace there."
He was also asked about his love for tennis to which Tendulkar quipped, "For me as a kid the choice was between tennis and cricket and I feel that I didn't make a bad choice. Though, I still love tennis and watch it whenever I get time."
About every kid wanting to play cricket and be like him, Tendulkar emphasized that it was for every parent to allow their children to pursue their interests. "Children have their own choices, they should be encouraged. For the kids, it is important that they pursue their dreams with devotion."
Tendulkar promised to pay a visit to the jawans. "I would like to play table tennis with you and would like to learn to play basketball when I come to meet you," he said.
Tendulkar also cut a cake and exchanged bouquets with the soldiers on camera.

STUDENTS of 20,000 Non-Affiliated Schools Can Appear as Regular Candidates
by
Punjabi Articles
In a decision that would benefit about 2.5 lakh students enrolled with 20,000 non-affiliated or non-recognised schools across the state, the Punjab Education Department today decided to allow all such students to appear as regular candidates in the exams to be conducted by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) for the academic session 2011-12.
The decision was taken at a meeting with more than 300 representatives of private schools called by Punjab Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan at the PSEB headquarters here. After the implementation of the Right to Education Act, the students enrolled with the non-affiliated schools had been denied permission to appear in the Board examination. As a result, the associations of the affected schools were consistently taking up the issue with the state government. The schools had been given time till 2013 to get themselves affiliated with the government agencies concerned.
Sekhwan said all such schools that were earlier termed as academies would now be termed as associate schools and their students would have the option to sit in semester examination as regular students or through the open school system. Prior to the ban on such schools, around 2.5 lakh students used to annually appear in the matriculation and senior secondary school examination as private candidates. After the meeting, the Minister and Punjab School Education Board chairman Dr Dalbir Singh Dhillon said Punjab was the first state to have taken such an initiative for the benefit of hundreds of students.
He said different rules and regulations would be framed to associate the private academies with the Board. The regulations would be simple to the extent that they will be acceptable to all type of private institutions. He said that the minimum criteria as per qualification of teachers would be set by the Board so that the academic level of the teachers of associated schools may be brought at par with the affiliated schools. All such measures would be in tune with the spirit of the RTE Act. However, the government is silent on the issue of salaries of the teachers in such schools. As per the decision, the one-time membership fee from each of the school would be Rs 20,000 and the annual continuation fee would be Rs 5,000.
‘Step will ensure revenue to state education board’: Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan has said that the decision to regularise schools would have multifaceted results as it not only would end the prolonged controversy over the fate of the students and teachers working in non-affiliated schools but also provide huge revenue to the Board.

Can Lovers be Friends !!!

In most relationships, the time to say goodbye usually arrives at one point or another -- unless you intend to walk down the aisle, of course (and even then...). With your ex, you've shared memories that will either make you laugh or cry, and it's time to take your experiences, put them in your back pocket and move on. But somewhere on the road of parting ways couples feel the need to promise to stay friends -- which ultimately leads to more broken promises.
So, can you ever be friends with your ex? Does it have to be all-or-nothing?
So, can you ever be friends with your ex? Does it have to be all-or-nothing?
One of the characteristics of a deeply bonded friendship is emotional safety
meaning that you have the freedom to completely be yourself and openly share about the deep down stuff of your life. With emotional safety, you can be real - no social mask required. This also means that you lack hidden agendas, and that’s where the problem comes in as former lovers attempt to be friends too soon.

This also means that you lack hidden agendas, and that’s where the problem comes in as former lovers attempt to be friends too soon.
The typical scenario is this: you dated, you fell in love, and you broke up.
(We’re not talking about the kind of dating relationships that never got that deep.) Now, the person who once loved and made love to you is dating someone new, maybe even sleeping with someone new. It is almost impossible to resist the temptation to compare yourself to the new person in your ex’s life. “Why not me?” you can’t help but wonder. You haven’t yet moved on to someone you’re crazy about, so you are still feeling raw and wounded.

Your ex-lover, now “friend,” shares about a new relationship and you find yourself “coaching” him/her against it.
You find fault with the new person, fault with the way they connected, fault with just about everything. You have a hidden agenda whether you are aware of it or not: to keep your ex-lover single until you are happily in love with someone else or until he/she comes back to you. Exposing yourself to the reality that your lover has moved on is like pouring gasoline on a fire - it keeps you inflamed, prevents healing.

Here’s what works: Post break-up, don’t see one another and don’t talk on the phone until a significant time period has passed.
Give yourself time to heal from the wounds, the loss, and the disappointment. Protect yourself from further injury by removing yourself from the knowledge of your ex’s love life. Agree that you will re-evaluate and check in with one another down the road. Six months, nine months, or a year later, take inventory. If you’re feeling truly comfortable - couldn’t care less if he/she is with someone new - then see if you still want a friendship with that person.

Most of the time, people discover that they don’t. Bottom line: it’s rare for ex-lovers to become good friends, and if they do, it is only after the passage of time and with a great deal of healing. Most likely you should just move on

I think friends can't be lovers, but lovers can be friends. I had a one friend. we were best friends. so, one day he said that he really likes me and wants to be closer. I didn't allow him. I was afraid to loose our friendship. but lovers are friends.
I think if more people were friends with their lovers it would work better. People say that they aren't looking for a friend they need a man or a woman and that is where they fall alot of times. When you are committed to someone you never want to hurt their feelings or telling something that might be best for them. When you with friends you keep it real. If a woman asks her man if she looks fat in a dress her of course says what?
NO! When she really looks a mess
He is worried about what she might think or say! Lovers and Friends are the best thing
