Kila Raipur Sports Festival January 31- February 3, 2013

Kila Raipur Sports Festival, popularly known as the Rural Olympics, is held annually in Kila Raipur (near Ludhiana), in Punjab, India.

Competition is held for major Punjabi rural sports, include cart-race, rope pulling.

In February each year, Ludhiana becomes the destination for hundreds of sports enthusiasts, including foreigners. They come to Kila Raipur to see the special breed of bullocks, camels, dogs, mules and other animals competing in competitive events. The most prestigious winners have attended. In the year of the Olympics 2008, Hakam and Naib Singh Dhaliwal from village Kalsian, Punjab took the 1st place prize. They also won first in gujjaral and phalewal. They are known in punjab as the men who hold the greatest passion in the sport

One of the event among them is the annual sports festival held in the Kila Raipur village near Ludhiana captures the attention of every sports lover worldwide.Kila Raipur Rural Sports Festival is popularly known as "Rural Olympics” may be it is named so because Olympics is the biggest sporting event and is held in a rural environment. It is held at Grewal Sports Stadium and the event is organised byGrewal Sports Association.

Chhapar Da Mela-Ludhiana

A FAMOUS VILLAGE OF PUNJAB (INDIA)

A big developed village near Ahmedgarh comes in distt. Ludhiana.
This village is famous for `Chhapar Da Mela', a big and crowdy
village fair at the Guga Pir Mandir. King of snakes is called `Guga'
by devotees.

This fair celebrated in every year in the month of September. Devotees believe by offering pooja during this fair at Mandir,they are safe from snakes for whole year.Last year there was a Horse fair held for the first time. Now its going to take place every year. 

There is an another interesting thing about this beautiful village is this village is having five pattis (Sections/Sectors) Sukha,Sultana, Harra, Tara & Nannu, people say these patti names derived from names of five brothers from this village came into existence. Most the people in this village have having last name 'BOPARAI'& `SEKHON'.

Biting fact: 94 dengue cases so far

The number of dengue and swine flu cases has been on the rise in various districts of the state. Ludhiana district has witnessed maximum number of cases, although the number is lower than the last year.

The state has witnessed two deaths due to swine flu and three due to dengue this year. While both patients suffering from swine flu were from Ludhiana, those who lost their lives to dengue belonged to Kapurthala, Sangrur and Muktsar.

Dr Dipak Bhatia, project programme officer and project coordinator, Integrated Disease Surveillance Project, Punjab, said: “The state received its first swine flu patient in 2009 from Jalandhar. But cases are now being reported from almost all districts, particularly Jalandhar and Ludhiana. We are taking preventive measures and have issued instructions to the civil surgeons of all districts to send the samples for testing to the Virology Laboratory at the PGI, Chandigarh. These tests can also be conducted at the National Centre for Disease Control, Delhi, and Religare Laboratory.

Highway horror in Moga; 18 dead.11 of family killed in truck-canter crash

Eighteen persons, including six women and five children, were killed in a head-on collision between a Canter and a truck near Ghal Kalan village on the Moga-Ferozepur national highway in the wee hours here today.

The victims hailed from Daulatpura Uchha and Daulatpura Niwan villages of the Moga district. They were returning home in the Canter (HP-73-1054) after paying obeisance at the Nanaksar Kaleran gurdwara situated in the Jagraon subdivision of Ludhiana district.

The accident took place around 2 am. While 14 persons were killed on the spot, four others died in a Moga hospital. No one travelling in the Canter could survive.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the speeding truck (PB-29G-9765) crashed head-on with the Canter while trying to overtake some vehicle. Satpal Singh Bhangu SP (D) said the truck driver fled from the spot leaving behind his vehicle.

Moga DSP was killed by robbers; three arrested

With the arrest of three persons, the city police claims to have cracked the murder case of Balraj Singh Gill, DSP, Moga, and Monica Kapila. The two were found dead in a farmhouse in the Golf Link area near Hambran road on February 1.

The accused, identified as Harwinder Singh alias Binder, Pritpal Singh alias Ladoo and Umesh Karda — all residents of Talwara village located near the farmhouse — were arrested by the Haibowal police this morning. Another accomplice, Hassanji of Leha village near Sidhwan Bet, is absconding.

Saras Mela: 10,000 throng venue on last day

On the concluding day of Saras Mela, more than 10,000 persons swarmed to the fair organised at Government College for Women by the District Rural Development Agency in collaboration with the Central government.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Aggarwal said the total sales figure had touched Rs 1.5 crore. The 11-day mela received more than 2 lakh visitors from March 11 to 21.

Some of the visitors who could not visit earlier made sure that they did not miss out the colours and sights of kaleidoscope of India’s culture. Robina Kaur, who had not been to the fair so far, said she had heard from her neighbours that intereseting artifacts were on display, but she did not get time. “I made sure that I visited the fair before it was over,” she said.

Private bus driver, conductor trapped under rape charges -Where is the safety for women ?????????

LUDHIANA: The driver and conductor of a private bus were arrested under the charges of rape case by a 30 year old woman. The heinous act took place when the victim who is a resident of Kapurthala was visiting her mother’s home in Hambran.

When the bus reached Jalandhar bypass, the passengers were alighted from the bus and she was all by herself in the bus. The victim is a widow and mother of six children who filed the charges of gang rape.

Ludhiana man breaks world record in hang-gliding

The ace trainer Naib Subedar Paramjeet Singh, who belongs to the village Sangatpura near Jagraon in Ludhiana, had no words to express his feelings today when he broke the 33 years old British world record in powered hang gliding by covering a distance of 380 kms between Sriganganagar and Sanderav near Jodhpur.

Paramjeet told the TNS over the telephone, “I have no words to describe my feelings for the achievement for which I was preparing for a long time.”

He broke the world record on the second day of the expedition this afternoon. The 700 kms expedition from Sriganganagar to Udaipur was flagged off yesterday.

With its few ramshackle houses, Sunet is an apology for a village that is said to have been a flourishing town during Samudragupta’s reign

 History, myth, business coalesce into a fascinating mix in this small village of Sunet which rests, literally, on history. With its few ramshackle houses, it’s almost an apology for a village that is said to have been a flourishing town in the reign of Samudragupta in 4th century AD.


History here rests in small, rickety cupboards in the form of seals, utensils, coins and coin moulds dating back to 3rd century BC.

Most of the elderly in the village have safeguarded these prized possessions more out of habit than informed choice.

33 per cent rural students quit studies at matric level: Study

In what raises a question mark over the efficacy of our education system, a Punjab Agricultural University study has pointed out that 33 per cent of the students in rural areas drop out of schools at the matric level.

The study findings suggest that there was a flaw in our education system that saw students reaching middle school but was unable to inculcate skills in them to handle board examinations. For the study, the PAU (Ludhiana) involved 50 schools from all five agro-climatic zones in Punjab.

Students have been opting out from government schools at all levels. But, more girls quit studies at the primary level, thus, indicating they were put to household chores at an early age in rural areas.

The sports enthusiasts at Kila Raipur games heaved a sigh of relief at the second day of the 76th Rural Olympics on Friday. 
 
The Bullock cart race at Kila Raipur, which had come under scanner owing to the order passed by the Animal Welfare Board of India had been cancelled by the Grewal Sports Association. The race is one of the most awaited events at the sports extravaganza held every year in the month of February.

LUDHIANA DOUBLE MURDER: COPS QUESTIONS 30 PEOPLE, DSP KIN

The district police have questioned over 30 people, including the family of DSP Balraj Singh Gill — who was found murdered along with one Monica Kapila — for the double murders that took place at a farmhouse near Golf Links Colony on the city outskirts on February 2.

“We are working on numerous theories like contract killing, honour killing, personal or professional rivalries. We have questioned a large number of people including the families of both the DSP and the woman. This is a very high profile and prestigious case for we have lost one of our own and cannot leave anything to chance,” said DCP Ashish Chaudhry.

Asked about Gill’s father’s allegation that the “woman angle” has been planted just to defame the deceased officer, Chaudhry said: “Why should we do that? There was a woman at this farmhouse and her dead body was found there. Above all, why will we malign one of our own officers? We do not want to hurt the family in any way but solving this case and getting the guilty behind the bars is our top most priority,” said Chaudhry.

Vehicles recovered, experts take fingerprint samples

With the police having recovered vehicles used by slain Moga DSP Balraj Singh Gill and Monica Kapila, an industrialist’s wife, to reach the farmhouse near the Hambran Road on February 1, a forensic team from the Punjab Police Training Centre, Phillaur, today collected samples of fingerprints, footprints and blood stains of the suspects from the vehicles.

While the Chevrolet Optra of the DSP was recovered from Balloke village last night, Toyota Innova of Monica was found abandoned near Sacred Heart School in BRS Nagar here late last night.

Chaura Bazar no longer stands by its name-Ludhiana

Believed to be over 100 years old, Chaura Bazar no longer stands by its definition. Encroachments on both sides of the road have narrowed down the way and sometimes it becomes even impossible to pass through the bazaar during daytime.


A decade ago, people from all walks of life used to visit Chaura Bazar for shopping. All hi-end shops were located here but slowly the shops started shifting from the congested bazaar. These shops have now shifted either to the Mall Road or Ghumar Mandi.

Kabaddi cup cancelled, Babbu Mann and Satinder Sartaj were scheduled to perform after the kabaddi matches -Ludhiana

Hundreds of fans were left high and dry after the much-awaited Canada-America Kabaddi Cup was cancelled as the sports department officials refused to install a stage in the middle of Guru Nanak Stadium for the performance of Punjabi singers.
Babbu Mann and Satinder Sartaj were scheduled to perform after the kabaddi matches.
Reacting to kabaddi-turned-singing concerts, District Sports Officer (DSO) Surjit Singh said: “From now on, no singer will be allowed to perform in the stadium during the kabaddi event until they make proper security arrangements and ensure that the stage would not damage the ground.”

Ludhiana to host ‘Saras mela’

"Saras-Mela", sponsored by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, will be held in Ludhiana from March 10 to March 21.

Self-help groups from all over the country are expected to set up at least 300 stalls at the 12-day extravaganza.
According to sources, the state government had decided to hold the mela in Ludhiana about two months back, but owing to the assembly elections, the dates for the mela could not be finalised.

The Ministry of Rural Development provides Rs 20 lakh for organising the event to promote self-help groups.

Slain DSP’s vehicle recovered

Ludhiana, February 5
Slain Moga DSP Balraj Singh Gill’s vehicle (Chevrolet Optra) was found 2 km from the crime site, near Bolloke village late tonight.

Meanwhile, the DSP’s father today lashed out at the police, complaining that instead of nabbing the criminals, it had been indulging in the character assassination of his son to "hush up" the case.

The DSP and Monica Kapila, an industrialist's wife, were found murdered in a farmhouse on Hambran road on Wednesday.

Lambasting police investigations, Kashmir Singh Gill, a retired BSF commandant, said instead of collecting evidence from the crime site, some officials had destroyed evidence.

DSP, woman hacked to death in Ludhiana

In a sensational double murder, Moga DSP Balraj Singh Gill was found hacked to death along with a woman at a farmhouse on the Hambran road here today. The blood-soaked bodies of the duo were found by a police party, which was searching for the ‘missing’ DSP since last evening, at the farmhouse. The place is owned by one Sanjay Agnihotri.

The woman has been identified as Monica Kapila (34) of Model Town in Ludhiana. Balraj’s body was found lying on a sofa with its neck chopped off. It bore multiple injuries, suspected to have been caused by a sword or an axe. The body of the woman was lying in a partially nude condition in the bathroom.

Istri Manch activists hold dharna at singer’s house

 Flay Diljit for using indecent words in his songs




More than 500 activists of the Istri Jagrati Manch today staged a dharna in front of the house of Punjabi singer Diljit here. The Punjabi singer faced the wrath of women activists for his alleged vulgar song "15 Saal ton ghatt kudiye" in his upcoming album.

Women activists, who came from Jalandhar, Nawanshehar, Patiala, Ludhiana and Sangrur, also raised slogans against lyricists and singers of vulgar songs.

At the time of protest, Diljit was not present in his house. His cousin Kuldeep Singh said that Diljit was in Mumbai and would be back in a couple of days.

Jarkhar sports festival begins Jarkhar Academy lads hold ITBP men 1-1

Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Club of Jarkhar village on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road took lead over others as the opening ceremony of the 26th edition of the annual sports festival began today under floodlights.

The organisers of the sports festival, popularly known as “mini modern rural Olympics”, have emerged as pioneers by holding the inaugural function of a rural festival under artificial lights.

The stadium of the village was jampacked well before the games torch arrived there. The torch procession had started yesterday from Olympian Surjit Singh Randhawa Stadium, Jalandhar. A large number of former and current sports stars along with sports lovers were present during the flag-off ceremony.
