In India 60% rural lives on less than Rs 35 a day


Around 60 per cent of India's rural population lives on less than Rs 35 a day and nearly as many in cities live on Rs 66 a day, reveals a government survey on income and expenditure.

"In terms of average per capita daily expenditure, it comes out to be about Rs 35 in rural and Rs 66 in urban India.

Around 60 per cent of the population live with these expenditures or less in rural and urban areas," said Director General of National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) J Dash in his preface to the report.

33 per cent rural students quit studies at matric level: Study


In what raises a question mark over the efficacy of our education system, a Punjab Agricultural University study has pointed out that 33 per cent of the students in rural areas drop out of schools at the matric level.

The study findings suggest that there was a flaw in our education system that saw students reaching middle school but was unable to inculcate skills in them to handle board examinations. For the study, the PAU (Ludhiana) involved 50 schools from all five agro-climatic zones in Punjab.

Students have been opting out from government schools at all levels. But, more girls quit studies at the primary level, thus, indicating they were put to household chores at an early age in rural areas.

Women voters take the lead in Bathinda (rural) segment


The female voters of the Bathinda (rural) assembly constituency took the lead over their male counterparts by registering high number of votes polled during the assembly elections held on January 30.

Precisely, 81.60 per cent women voters cast their vote as compared to mere 78.57 per cent of male voters. The Bathinda (rural) reserved is a newly carved out assembly segment that has witnessed an encouraging trend of women voters turning up more in number
.
While Bathinda (rural) saw women taking the lead, the other five segments, including Rampura, Bhucho (Reserve), Bathinda (Urban), Talwandi Sabo and Maur constituencies had male voters in the lead.

Maximum poll percentage was registered in Rampura at 87.50 per cent. Even the women voters at Rampura stole the show by having highest polling percentage of 86.82 per cent while men in this constituency registered the highest polling percentage at 88.11 per cent.

OVER 60% PUNJAB POPULATION RESIDES IN RURAL AREAS


Over 60 per cent of the population in Punjab resides in rural areas although the share of urban population has gone up in the last one decade, according to official data.

"Of the 27,704,236 people living in Punjab, 17,316,800 (62.7 per cent) live in rural area whereas 10,387,436 (37.49) are in urban places," Census Operations Director Seema Jain said. She said the share of urban population has increased to 37.49 per cent in 2011 as compared to 33.92 per cent in 2001. The literacy rate in the state also increased from 69.65 per cent in 2001 to 76.68 per cent in 2011, Jain said.
