Govt announces scheme for girlchild


To uplift the social status of girls, improve the declining gender ratio and tackle the school dropout rate among girls, a special programme has been chalked out for them.

Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Madan Mohan Mittal said today that a girlchild born on or after April 1, 2011, to couples following the two-child norm and whose income was les than 30,000 per annum would be covered under the scheme. The department would invest Rs 20,000 in LIC in the name of the beneficiary. 

On birth, a girlchild would get Rs 1,100, on attaining the age of 1 and 2 years (after immunisation), the child would get Rs 1,200, in the third year she would be entitled for Rs 1,500 and on admission to Class I, the department would deposit Rs 1,100 in her bank account.
