Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi is dead, Libyan Official Says: Latest News

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) — Reports indicate deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi is dead, the National Transitional Council spokesman said Thursday.

Revolutionary fighters attacked the house where Gadhafi was hiding, Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam told CNN. Gadhafi was shot while trying to flee, he said.

“Colonel Gadhafi is history,” he said, adding that interim council’s chairman or prime minister needs to officially confirm the death.

However, Gadhafi’s status remained unclear as a host of conflicting reports surfaced Thursday. None could be independently verified.

AbdelHakim Bilhajj, head of the National Transitional Council’s military arm in Tripoli announced Gadhafi;s death live on Al-Jazeera Arabic Thursday. It was also reported by National Transitional Council television station Al-Ahrar. It did not cite a source.

A grisly cell phone photograph distributed by the news agency Agence France Presse appeared to show the arrest of a bloodied Gadhafi. CNN could not independently verify the authenticity of the image.

Gadhafi’s capture was also reported by Libyan television, citing the Misrata Military Council.

The U.S. State Department could not confirm any of the reports about Gadhafi’s capture or killing, a spokeswoman said.

Abubaker Saad, who served as a Gadhafi aide for nine years, said it didn’t really matter whether Gadhafi was dead or alive — as long as he was captured.

“As long as he was on the run he represented a very ominous danger to the Libyan people,” Saad told CNN.

In another major development, revolutionary fighters said they wrested control of Sirte Thursday. And NATO said it is going to convene soon for a meeting to discuss ending its operation in Libya, a source told CNN.

Earlier, NATO aircraft struck two pro-Gadhafi military vehicles in the Sirte vicinity.

Without foolproof evidence of Gadhafi’s capture, it was unclear whether Thursday would turn out to be the biggest day in recent Libyan history. Statements made by representatives of Libya’s new leadership in the past have not always turned out to be true.

But Libyans, who have been waiting for months for Gadhafi’s demise, erupted in deafening celebrations.

Horns blared and celebratory gunfire burst into the air in Tripoli.

Gadhafi ruled Libya with an iron fist for 42 years. The mercurial leader came to power in a bloodless coup against King Idris in 1969, when he was just an army captain.

By the end of his rule, he claimed to be “King of Kings,” a title he had a gathering of tribal leaders grant him in 2008.

But a February uprising evolved into civil war that resulted in ousting the strongman from power.

Many were waiting for photographs as proof of Gadhafi’s capture.

Earlier, anti-Gadhafi fighters said they had taken control of the last holdout of loyalists in Sirte. They said they were still battling pockets of resistance, but they were in control of District 2.

Sirte has been the big prize for Libya’s NTC, waiting for the city to fall to officially declare liberation.

Most residents abandoned Sirte in the many weeks of bloody battles that raged there. Revolutionary forces have fought Gadhafi’s men street by street, cornering the last vestiges of the old regime to that last district.

Gadhafi, wanted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, for alleged crimes against humanity has not been seen in public in months. Many believed he was hiding out in Sirte after rebel forces marched into Tripoli in August.

CHHEHARTA SAHIB, GURDWARA

CHHEHARTA SAHIB, GURDWARA, 7 km west of Amritsar is named after a well got sunk by Guru Arjan (1563-1606). The well was so wide that six Persian wheels installed around it could operate simultaneously. Hence its nameChheharta, lit. having six (chhe) Persian wheels (hart or ha/t). The well is now covered up, but its water is pumped up to feed the main tank of the Gurdwara.

Now developed as an industrial township, Chheharta falls within the revenue limits ofVadali Guru, a village one km to the south, where Guru Arjan had stayed during 1594-97.The Gurdwara complex, set on a 6acre walled compound, includes a divan hall, with a square sanctum in the middle enclosed by a brass palisade. Above the sanctum is a square room with a lotus dome topped by a goldplated pinnacle. Two Nishan Sahibs, Sikh flags, atop 25metre tall flagposts, one on either side, stand in front of the hall.

The Gurdwara is managed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee through a local committee, which also controls other historical shrines ofVadali Guru. Congregations held on the fifth day of the light half of every lunar month attract large gatherings. The largestattended is the fair held on this day in the month of Magh (JanuaryFebruary) which marks the popular Basant Parichami festival.

Australia is new address of sham marriages

After the US and Canada, Australia is the new address of sham marriages. In their pursuit of the dollar dream, young men and women are using the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) way to enter Australia.

With more Punjabi girls than boys able to clear the IELTS, they secure admission into Australian colleges and universities with relative ease. They then start looking for a groom willing to pay the hefty fee.

There have been several cases of such brides being abandoned by their spouses on reaching Australia. Manpreet Kaur, 25, from Tusse village in Ludhiana, who married Kulvinder Singh of Sujapur, is one such victim. Having scored 5.5 bands in IELTS, she struck a deal with Kulvinder in 2008. The latter agreed to pay her fee for a diploma in management from a Melbourne college. He sent her back to India in January this year, promising that he would join her later. He never returned.

Poll turns preserve of the rich Capt, Badal were among top 20 crorepatis during ’07 poll

Politics is becoming an “exclusive game” of the rich and those with average means are being elbowed out. The rhetoric on women empowerment notwithstanding, only 56 women of a total of 1,055 candidates contested the 2007 assembly poll. This means that just 5 per cent women were given representation by the parties as compared to 8 per cent in the 2002 elections, says a report jointly prepared by the Punjab Election Watch and the Association for Democratic Reforms.

The data presented by the two organsiations indicates that the election process has virtually been reduced to a “money game” with the assets of candidates of all major parties like the Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and the BJP running into crores.

YOUNGSTERS NOT ENTHUSED BY VOTER CARD

Political parties in the state may be vying with one another to woo the young voters, but the latter are in no haste to enroll themselves as voters. Only 1.35 lakh of the 10.79 lakh new voters in the age group of 18-19 are eligible to cast their ballot as of now.

With the summary revision of photo electoral rolls beginning today, the commission hopes to register a large number of these ‘missing’ voters with Chief Electoral Officer Kusumjit Sidhu appealing to the young to get themselves enrolled. Sidhu said the youngsters could check the photo electoral roll and download forms from the website . Claims and objections, she said, could be submitted between October 4 and October 20.

The Election Commission has decided to monitor paid during campaigning for the ensuing assembly elections in February. The CEO said a special committee would monitor the media at the district level. It would take into account the advertising value of paid news and register the same in the “shadow” file of the candidate concerned. The candidate would be issued due notice to explain his stand.

PUNJAB WILL ORGANISE INTERNATIONAL WRESTLING MATCHES SAYS SUKHBIR

‘PDS KEROSENE SCAM’ ROCKS ASSEMBLY

Pegging it at a whopping Rs 2,000-crore scam, the Opposition Congress on Wednesday stalled proceedings of the Punjab Assembly alleging largescale bungling in distribution of kerosene.

Soon after the Zero Hour began, Congress MLA Sunil Jakhar — who led the Opposition charge on the floor of the House — said he had brought 10,000 affidavits collected from poor families, who were not getting fuel. He demanded an adjournment motion over the issue, which had been earlier denied by Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon as “neither a recent occurrence nor a specific issue”.

However, Jakhar reiterated that since it was the last session before the Assembly polls and kerosene diversion was a public issue of grave importance, the motion be allowed. “What is the definition of specific on which grounds an adjournment motion is not being allowed? We have definite allegation on the PDS system. Punjab lifts over 22 crore litres of kerosene every year. Nearly 20 lakh families which do not have a gas connection are entitled to get it.

But where is the kerosene going? Just through a random survey across the state, we have collected 10,000 affidavits. If my affidavits are false, put me behind bars like Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has done with police officer Sanjeev Bhatt,” Jakhar said. But the Speaker declined to concede to the Opposition’s demand, following which, Congress MLAs stormed to the well of the House raising anti-government slogans. Amid the din, state Food and Civil Supplies Minister Paratap Singh Kairon rose to reply to the allegations.

RIGHT TO SERVICE ACT IS A DESPERATE ACT: CONGRESS

The Punjab assembly paved the way for citizens to get a right to government services by unanimously passing the Right to Services Bill, 2011, aimed at ensuring time-bound delivery of 67 citizen services.

The bill came up for a lively debate with a few Congress MLAs, including Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Sunil Jakhar and independent MLA Charanjit Channi, voicing doubts if the Act will actually be implemented in letter and spirit. "The basic purpose of the Act is to make the bureaucracy accountable. We are only trying to cure the symptoms, but not looking at the malady," said Jakhar.

Talking about the bill, its chief architect, Sukhbir Badal, said in the House, "It's an attempt to change the system which breeds corruption. We are trying to minimize the point of interaction of common man with officials so that corruption decreases." Allaying apprehensions of Opposition parties, Badal said that chairman of the commission, set up for Right to Services Bill, would be appointed in consultation with the leader of Opposition and the commission would be an independent statutory body that can initiate complaints even suo motu.
