‘Those who talk about human rights do not seem to believe in them’

Central University holds a lecture commemorating Human Rights Day

The Central University of Punjab (CUP) organised a lecture commemorating the Human Rights Day. A special lecture was organised to commemorate declaration of the Universal Human Rights on December 10 1948.

On the occasion, eminent scholar Prof Harish Puri, former head, Department of Political Science, Guru Nanak Dev University, (Amritsar) delivered the lecture.

Giving specific examples, Prof Puri asserted that in the contemporary world, the issue of human rights has become a domain of hypocrisy. “Those who talk about human rights do not seem to believe in them,” he stated. On the one hand, we have rhetoric of human rights and on the other, a blatant and barbarous denial of minimal human dignity and right to life to a large section of the population,” he said.

Tracing the history of invasion of Iraq and Vietnam, Dr Puri stressed upon the lies, arrogance and hypocrisy of the expansionist nations. He highlighted their callous disregard of public opinion and human values in their violent and aggressive attitude towards the nations and governments that dare to disagree with their designs and policies.
