President of the EGS Teachers Union Pritpal Singh Fazilka said at least 3,000 persons had been teaching non-schoolgoing children since 2003. However, the centres opened under the EGS were closed on March 31,2008, rendering the teachers jobless. Under the EGS scheme, each teacher was paid Rs 1,000 per month.
