With the controversy over the voting rights to Sehajdhari Sikhs refusing to die, Punjab Pradesh Congress committee president Capt Amarinder Singh said it was not important to know who appointed Harbhagwan Singh as counsel for the Centre. What’s important is the statement that he made in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
“His statement that the Centre has withdrawn the notification denying voting rights to Sehejdhari Sikhs was based on a telephonic call that he received. It need to be probe as to was the mysterious caller,” Amarinder said. He was reacting to allegations that his wife, Union Minister of State for External affairs Preneet Kaur may have recommended Harbhagwan’s appointment. Amarinder said if at all Preneet made the recommendation, she would have done so after a group representing Sehejdhari Sikhs met her.
Preneet Kaur, when contacted, said she was in New Zealand and refused to comment on the issue. In another meeting, Amarinder described the Badals as second generation mahants misusing the SGPC, and asked Sukhbir Badal not to divert public attention from real issues by trying to exploit the religious sentiments of the people
