BADAL MAKES HISTORY IN PUNJAB, RETAINS POWER

How the Akali-BJP combine bucked the anti-incumbency trend and routed the Congress despite the Manpreet factor

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP alliance made history by overcoming anti-incumbency to retain power for the second consecutive term, thus creating history in the Punjab electoral politics. By winning 56 seats on its own and with its alliance partner BJP winning 12 seats, this will be the first time in Punjab’s history that a ruling party has been voted back to power.

By wrestling 68 of the 117 Assembly sets, the Akali BJP combine has got a formidable lead over its main rival, Congress, which has won 46 seats. While three independents have won at the hustings, the Third Front under the banner of “Sanjha Morcha” has failed to get any seat.

Badal clan beats royalty in riches

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's family of agriculturists is richer than the royal family of Patiala. While the Badals are worth nearly Rs 100 crore, Capt Amarinder Singh and his wife Preneet Kaur are worth less than half at Rs 45.71 crore.

Although the couple's son, Raninder Singh, will file his papers tomorrow, his assets in the 2009 parliamentary election, when he contested from Bathinda, were Rs 7.28 crore and that of his wife Rs 6.47 crore.

Badal’s affidavit that formed part of his nomination filed from Lambi today showed he possessed assets worth Rs 6.92 crore.

SAD’s Moga rally ‘big, but not big enough’

It was expected to be the “mother of all rallies” and the “largest ever in the world” but Shiromani Akali Dal’s Maha Vikas Rally today turned out to be a classic case of being ‘big, but not big enough’.

Though Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal proclaimed from the stage that 6-8 lakh people were present at the rally, independent observers felt that the figure was much less.

When Sukhbir arrived on the dais at 11.45 am, a majority of the chairs in the ‘pandal’ spread over 250 acres of agricultural land, were lying vacant and remained so till the culmination of the rally.

Much to the embarrassment of the party, people started leaving the venue when Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the last speaker, got up to address the gathering at around 3 pm.

GOVT BLATANTLY USING OFFICIAL MACHINERY FOR MOGA RALLY: CAPT

Alleging blatant abuse of the official machinery to bring people to SAD’s Moga rally, state Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh said that Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was resorting to his characteristic “self-delusionary tactics” by claiming to mobilise five lakh people for the rally on December 18 by abusing his power.

“The deputy commissioners, district transport officers, tehsildars, DSPs, SHOs and patwaris have been asked and assigned the task of getting the numbers. Then why just five lakh why not 10 lakh people, as it is matter of your imagination only and it can be as big and large as your wild imagination can run,” Amarinder said in a press statement.

Poll-bound CM leaves no stone unturned

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has been on an inauguration spree. Just as the Kabaddi World Championship came to an end, the SAD-BJP government hastened to lay stones for various projects, at times four in a day.

The Opposition has launched a tirade against the government, saying that the focus of development is on the Bathinda region alone. The Congress calls it an election gimmickry, saying that a majority of projects for which stones have been laid will not see the light of the day.

Clearly aimed at the Sikh votes, four memorials have been dedicated to the Panth. These include the Khalsa Heritage Centre (KHC) which was inaugurated on November 25.

7654 Teachers’ Union awaits CM’s response

PCC’s development claims a sham: Badal High drama after sangat darshan

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today came down heavily on the Congress and termed the claims made it regarding development in the state during its regime as nothing more than a “bundle of lies”.

Replying to a query on the sidelines of a Sangat Darshan programme in Gidderbaha assembly constituency today, Badal said the tall claims made by Congress leaders in their advertisements were hollow as no development had taken place in the state during their tenure.

Badal said, “For instance, they (Congress leaders) did not even generate a single unit of power during their government in Punjab. Now, they are making big claims, which are a sham”.

He added, “I can compare the developmental works done by both the parties as I have a record of the works we did. We opened 17 colleges since we formed the present government while they had opened only three. We opened six universities and they opened one. Moreover, Punjab was on the 14th position in the education sector, but now it ranks third in the country”.

Protesting EGS teachers gherao CM, manhandled

Agitators threaten to spoil Badal’s birthday bash today

Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) teachers, mostly women, were manhandled by the police when they gheraoed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s convoy at Sukhna Ablu village in Muktsar district today.

The incident took place soon after an “unsuccessful” meeting of the EGS teachers’ delegation with the CM at the Government High School in the village, where he held a Sangat Darshan programme.

Accusing the CM of showing dillydallying attitude towards the demands of employment and stern action against the Akali Sarpanch Balwinder Singh “Toti” of Daula village for slapping Varinder Kaur, one of their female colleagues, they blocked the main gate of the school to press for the acceptance of their demands.

‘Not the slap, but brazenness of sarpanch is hurting’

Victim Varinder Kaur says she is getting threatening calls, vows to fight for justice

“It’s not the physical pain of the slap that hurts me. What hurts me is the brazenness of the Akali Sarpanch, Balwinder Singh Toti, who hit me and humiliated me in public without bothering about our decades of loyalty to the Shiromani Akali Dal and its leader, Parkash Singh Badal”, says Varinder Pal Kaur, the Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) teacher, whose victimisation by the arrogant Akali leader has evoked sharp reactions with even icons like Shah Rukh Khan dubbing it as “disgusting”.

“My grandfather and uncle had gone to jail in 1971 (during Emergency) and again in 1982 for this party but all that is meaningless today”, she said while showing scores of photographs of her family members with senior Akali leaders, including Parkash Singh Badal.

Alleging that she was getting threatening calls from Toti’s associates for reaching a compromise, the brave girl said she’ll continue with her agitation and protest at Chief Minister’s Sangat Darshan at her village tomorrow. “Toti should be arrested and all the policemen who stood there as mute spectators suspended”, she demanded.

Disappointment and disgust writ large on her face, Varinder Pal Kaur recalled how five years ago Parkash Singh Badal had attended the funeral of her grandfather. “Even in my wildest of dreams, I couldn’t ever think of such a treatment being meted out to me”, she said adding that she was not scared of the threats from Toti or his associates.
