Ahead of assembly poll, govt promotes 5,000 constables


Around 5,199 constables and head constables got promotions at a state-level ceremony at the PAP Complex here today. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal announced the promotions as part of a series of welfare measures for the police officials and their families.

“The Punjab Police is recruiting more than 2,000 women constables in next three months. Around 4,000 constables will also be recruited within this period. The Phillaur-based Punjab Police Academy is also being converted into country’s first Police University at a cost of Rs 100 crore. The proposed university will run in collaboration with the best police institutes of the world,” said Sukhbir.

The constables and head constables have been given promotion to the rank of Senior Constables and Assistant Sub-Inspectors. “The SAD-BJP Government is the first one to focus on welfare of the constabulary. Earlier, constables used to get the rank of senior constable after nine years of service that has been reduced to eight years, benefiting 1,600 constables. Similarly, 3,599 head constables, who have completed 10 years of service, have been promoted as ASIs (local rank) under the new policy,” said Sukhbir.
